"Good day Y'gel." J'ren picked up his pace to pull alongside his
fellow bronzerider. He eyed the man and chuckled. "You look to be in
good spirits today." There was a shine in those eyes, one that
he had held in his own not too long ago.
"Good day," he said with a smile. He couldn't help but feel a little
giddy. That wasn't a feeling that came along all that often for the
big healer. "How are things with you?" He asked the question almost
automatically.
"Doing very well, thanks." J'ren kept pace with the healer easily,
long strides carrying him quickly through the halls. "What about
you?"
"Excellent!" he grinned at the younger bronzerider. "Guess who came to
see me this morning?"
"Hm. I don't know. Your daughter?" Not that Y'gel didn't see his
daughter a lot. J'ren knew the dragonhealer had a close relationship
with her.
He laughed. "No, Rhosyn! She came to my office to find me."
The smile that J'ren wore flickered a little. "She....did? What did she want?"
"She said she wanted me to be her escort to the hatching at Dolphin
Cove next month. Can you imagine that?" By now he was grinning from
ear to ear.
J'ren came to a dead stop when he heard the bronzerider's words. "She...what?"
When J'ren stopped Y'gel kept walking but turned around so he was
walking backwards and spread his hands. "Yup! She asked me to be her
escort"
"She asked you." J'ren's jaw tightened. He started walking again,
teeth pressing hard against one another, then releasing. "This
morning you said?"
"Yes," he said pointing extravagantly at the other man. He turned back
around and marched on. "Isn't it sharding _great?_"
"Yeah. Great." Except it wasn't. J'ren stuffed his thumbs into his
belt. "Except I was going to ask her." That very day, in fact.
"Oh really?" for a moment he was disappointed thinking perhaps the
younger man would have a prior claim and then remembered that Rhosyn
had actually hunted him down. "I... Well, not quite sure what to say."
He shrugged.
"I have a favour to ask." J'ren continued, watching the older man.
He wasn't angry, but this was something he particularly wanted to do.
"Would you consider allow me to take her, if she agrees to it?"
"Are you sure you want to do that?" he was certain he wouldn't want to
ask the Weyrwoman to change her mind once she'd decided on something.
"Look, she came to find _me_. I don't know why but I'm not going to
look a gift runner in the mouth." He put a hand on his hip and shook
his head. "I serve at the Weyrwoman's pleasure. If she decides you
should take her instead then my loss."
J'ren nodded. He wanted a chance, and that was all he was asking for.
"All right then. I suppose I will see you later." With a polite
salute, the wingsecond turned and made his way through the halls. He
had a Weyrwoman to seek out.
