Y'gel

Y'gel

Y'gel was handling his hide work and specifically following up on the
older dragons in the Weyr. Part of his responsibilities delt with
elderly dragon's continuing health and well being which meant flying
more than just for a meal.

His finger came to a name and started tapping. **Aug, can you please
ask Soravath's to come see me?**

"Angshel," he called.

The gawky boy perked up when the Master called his name. He had been
reading one of his study manuals in order to go over some of the
lecture from earlier this afternoon. "Sir?"

"Go get me some fresh klah son, I'm going to be here for awhile." He
began humming to himself as he made some notes on a rather senior
blue.

Angshel smiled and went to do his bidding, keeping an eye on the blue
as he did so. Finding the largest cup he could, he poured the klah
for Y'gel and added a smaller one for himself. Dinner seemed a long
way away, and he needed the jolt.

Mardria had known that it was inevitable that Y'gel would be in
contact with her. She was far overdue for Soravath's regularly
scheduled healer visit, and despite the fact that they no longer flew
Thread, Y'gel was pretty insistent about them going in for their
visits.

**Alright love, let's head down there and get him placated, at least
for a few months,** Mardria thought to her lifemate, mounting her with
great effort. Being not only a large woman, but also one who was in
her 80th decade meant that climbing up and down the side of a dragon
was not something she could do with haste.

A short time later, the elderly green pair were standing before the
Dragonhealer. "Y'gel," Mardria greeted, dropping his title. She'd
found out turns ago that once you reached a certain age, you could
take liberties with certain typical formalities.

Y'gel smiled at the elderly rider. He didn't stand on ceremony where
titles were concerned. He treated a gold rider and a green rider the
same. His eyes were for the elderly green dragon. She was his patient.
"Thank you for coming Mardria."

He walked over to Soravath "An how are you doing darling," he asked.
"Any additional complaints from last time?"

Soravath nuzzled the Dragonhealer affectionately, and Mardria conveyed
the green dragon's complaints. "She says that her wings have been more
stiff recently. Also, the arthritis in her knees has been flaring up
on landings again." Mardria felt terrible for Soravath, who once was a
fast and nimble young dragon.

Angshel shyly sidled up to the green, giving her a rub on the shoulder
to let her know he was there. She may have been past her prime, but
to the boy, she was still beautiful.

Y'gel ran his hands over her her knees and could feel the swelling.
"Are there any drafts in your weyr?" he asked. "Perhaps one that was
near the hatching sands would help. We can talk to the headwoman about
moving you."

"It does get drafty sometimes, we are pretty high up," Mardria agreed.
"And a warmer weyr would likely be better for my knees as well. I fear
that the two of us don't get out as much as we used to. I think she's
putting on a little weight, and, well... obviously I have as well."

Y'gel looked over his shoulder and chuckled. He still remembered
Mardria in his minds eye from when he was a youth. Somehow his mind
picture of her hadn't aged all that much.

Mardria eyed the young boy curiously while Y'gel looked over Soravath.
"Good day, Apprentice, I don't believe I've met you. And that is truly
a feat given how much time I am down here. What's your name?" She knew
he had to be a relatively new apprentice because of the awed look that
he gave towards Soravath, who was hardly the best looking dragon at
the Weyr.

"Oh, uh, I'm Angshel, glad to meet you too. She's lovely!" All
dragons to him were beautiful, even the most ancient of them. And
despite her obvious age, her coat and colour were still beautiful. In
her age, she must have been a knock out, the boy figured.

"She gives you her thanks, Angshel. And I'm glad to meet you as well,"
Mardria greeted. "So what do you think, Y'gel? Is she doing alright?
When can we rejoin the fighting wings?" She joked.

He waggled his eyebrows at her. "She's still pretty spry for not
exercising at all. But you do need to get her out of the Weyr more.
Maybe if she were to hunt in the wild now and then. Or play in the
ocean. That's very good exersize." He put on a special lear for her.
"You too." he added.

Mardria blinked innocently, "Me? Need exercise? But when am I supposed
to fit that into my busy schedule?" She asked.

"You can talk to the healers about it if you want." he looked back at
Soravath. "But I want your pretty girl out in the water at least once
a week, and more in good weather." He turned to the young apprentice.
"Angshel, can you please remind me to talk to the Headwoman about
moving them?"

Mardria nodded solemnly. Despite the fact that she was typically a bit
on the lazy side, if the healers said her lifemate needed more
exercise, she would make sure that she got it.

He thought maybe he'd reached her. Activity was the key to keeping
limber at their age. They had already served the Weyr very well and
deserved respect and a comfortable retirement. River Bluff was a good
place to do just that.

Mardria had once been quite the lovely woman and Y'gel remembered the
dark haired beauty of his youth. He reached for her hand and squeezed
"Thank you for bringing Soravath down to see me," he said.

Mardria smiled, a hint of her former beauty becoming evident. "Thank
you, Y'gel, it's so nice to see you again. I will take better care of
Soravath. I promise that." She looked over at Angshel. "And you,
youngun', be sure to keep that sense of wonder. That's something that
you can't replace."

The boy blushed when she address him. "Thanks...thank you. I'll
try." Even after being at the Weyr for a few months now, he_was_still
in awe of the dragons.

"If you ever want to come out and give ol' Soravath a good scrubbing,
just let me know. Faranth knows it's hard for me to get every spot as
clean as she'd like it nowadays," Mardria said.

"Really?" He would love that.

"Of course. Tell ya what. How 'bout you meet me at the weyrlake
tomorrow after your morning classes, and you can give her a nice
scrubbing," Mardria offered. "Would that make you happy?"

"Y-yes!" He couldn't believe his luck! Now he'd get to do something
some of the other apprentices that were also Candidates talked about
doing. Him, Angshel! He almost felt like pinching himself, just to
make sure he wasn't actually dreaming.

Mardria looked over at Y'gel, "So long as that is alright with you of
course?" She asked sweetly.

He remembered that smile and how it had devastated many a rider over
the years. "Of course it's alright. So long as you're back in time for
afternoon class."

"Then that sounds like a plan. Angshel, I'll see you tomorrow. Y'gel,
when would you like to see me again?" she asked with a wink.

Y'gel grinned at the older woman. "You pretty girls get some exercise
and come see me in a week. Alright?"

"Will do," Mardria said.
