Y'gel

Y'gel

Y'gel mounted the stairs once more to the Weyrwoman's office. For some
reason he'd been thinking of all that coppery hair and decided to deliver
his report on dragon injuries to her personally. These were riders who would
be forced by their injuries to fly in the Queen's wing during their recovery.

She was currently working on distributing the tithes to where they needed to
go. Rhosyn was careful to make sure that the crafters and the Weyrfolk got
their fair share.

He knocked on her door and swung it open. "Weyrwoman, do you have a few
moments?"

She looked up at the intrusion and noticed who it was. Fearing the worst at
such an entrance, she stood up. "What is it?"

He held out a hand the moment he saw the concern on her face. "Nothing
shattering," he said. "Just a few more names to be added to the Queen's
wing for the time being," he said.

She sighed and sat down, catching herself. "How many?" She hated to hear
about so many injuries. "And why?"

"Three," he started. "But one of those is an improvement. I'm releasing
F'tel and Zelopleth back to active duty but would like them to fly
first with the Queens' wing until we're certain they're strong enough."

She nodded and wrote down the details in her medical duty roster. "And
what was their original injury?"

"F'tel took a threadscore to his right shoulder and Zelopleth to the
leading edge of his wing. Reports are it was an unlucky shift in the
wind. But their confidence was shaken," he said.

"The young blue is just a strain and he should recover quickly. I just
don't want him to overfly again. I'm going to have a talk with his
Wingleader."

Y'gel was trying very hard to concentrate on his report and not on the
way her hair fell over her shoulder. **Silly old man** he told
himself.

"I can fix the overflying. The others will take more time, but it'll come."
Rhosyn had made sure that the riders she sent back to the wings had
a healthy appreciation for not wanting to ride in the Queen's Wing again.

He chuckled, quite sure she was more than capable of taking the proper
care of the riders. "The last one will be a bit longer though," he
said. "Martesil is pregnant... again." Personally he thought the young
woman had plenty at four but now there would be a fifth.

"How many does that make? I can understand providing future candidates
but at some point a woman's body should stop. And if it puts her dragon
in danger.." Clearly Rhosyn didn't think that was acceptable. A well-timed
trip between was easier than a dead rider.

"It will be her fifth and I will ask for the healers to give you an opinion on
her health to bear another." He didn't have to add that the Weyrwoman
could ask her to go between should it endanger the pair for her to
carry to term.

She nodded, interested to see what the healers had to say, though her mind
was already halfway made up. "How long have you been here, now, Y'gel?"

"Oh Faranth," he said with a grin. "Thirty turns or more Weyrwoman."

"Between Tsaera, Zharesti, and myself, you've seen a lot then. What do you
think about things now versus then?" Rhosyn tapped her stylus against the
desk as she thought about it.

He wasn't quite sure where the Weyrwoman was going with this line of
questioning but his thoughts turned toward each of the women in turn.
"It was different under each of them," he said. "But your job is made
up of spectacular events and thankless work. If you do that work well,
no one really notices because things run smoothly."

"I wish I could have met Tsaera," she admitted. "What I heard-she seems
like someone I would like to be." It went without saying that the stories about
Zharesti weren't the same.

"Yes," he smiled. "You would have liked her."

"I wonder what I'll be like when I get old." Mulling that over, she
nodded to Y'gel. "Is that all you needed?"

**Not really** "You'll still be a lovely person," he said. Then he
stood, certain that every bronzerider and probably most of the browns
were envious of anyone who grabbed her attention. He wasn't one to put
much stock in rumors but he pretty much knew he didn't have any real
hope. He was far too old to be interesting for more than his work and
friendship. He stifled a sigh.

"Isn't that enough?" he chuckled recognizing the dismissal.

"I was hoping there was something about 'Well Weyrwoman we could discuss
further developments over midday meal so you could leave your office....'" She
shrugged, looking at the tithing rolls, knowing it was important
business that really
couldn't wait.
