Qorri gathered her notes and then went for her usual meeting for the
Weyrwoman. These meetings
would likely become more frequent as the hatching approached. The
Headwoman approached and
stopped, waiting for her to finish before she entered.
"Qorri," Janani said, looking up, "come in." She motioned for the
Headwoman to take a seat. "How
are things going for you today?" Janani always liked to start their
meetings with some general pleasantries.
"It's been a normal day, no disasters." She entered and took her usual
seat, adjusting her hides
and preparing herself. "And the dragons?"
"All is well at the moment," Janani replied. "We still have a few out
of the fighting wings due to
injury. I know I'll be glad when they are all back. At least with the
upcoming hatching we know we'll
have more dragons and riders soon. I just hope we don't lose any more
in the meantime. I know
the loss of N'vanik's Wingsecond has been hard on the Weyr. We really
need some good news for
a change." She gave the headwoman a sad smile at the mention of the
loss. Thread still had many,
many Turns to go. Would they really all survive so much loss and
agony? At least the hatching would
provide a moment of happiness for everyone involved.
"About that...so the holders will be sending a bit of extra tithe to
make up for what we need at the
hatching. The harpers know what they're doing and we've sent out the
invitations, though of course
it's not an exact date. N'vanik will handle the pickups, but I need to
know if there is anything special
you'd like since it's your first here." Her eyes watched Janani, ideas
running through her mind.
Janani nodded as she listened. "Well, I like a traditional Harper to
retell some of the best songs for our
new weyrlings, give them a boost of energy and excitement. And I would
love a nice red wine from the
Vintner Hall as it is my favorite. Aside from that, I would just like
to make sure all our important visitors
get treated appropriately, good seating, and all that." Janani waved
her hand, knowing Qorri would take
care of that from here on out.
Scribbling notes, she nodded. "Would you like to go see the hallmaster
yourself to taste and pick
one?" Qorri didn't trust herself when it came to red wine. She
preferred green wines or whites.
"That sounds like a wonderful idea," Janani replied. Of course that
meant she would need to get Angdelouth
away from the eggs for a spell or find another way to get there, but
arranging for someone else to take her
while her gold fawned over her eggs shouldn't be a major problem.
"We've still got some time before the hatching will happen, so I can
make the trip. Anything else we need
to see to today?" she asked the Headwoman, knowing Qorri knew nearly
all the goings-on in the Weyr.
"We're on track and the mess from the hurricane should be taken care
of. The candidates are once again in
the barracks, which is helpful. The searchriders are trying to bring
more in." She frowned, deciding to be direct.
"Taeshin has been doing better and has been fulfilling his extra
duties. When will he know whether or not
he'll be Standing this time?" The sevendays were ticking by and Qorri
hated watching him wait.
"Hmm," Janani contemplated that, "Do you think he has learned his
lesson? I cannot have him on the sands
if he is not of the right mindset. Perhaps I need to speak with him
again and see if he has really learned anything
from these tasks I've laid out for him. What do you think Qorri? You
spend more time around them than I do?"
"I think his original problem was adolescent emotions mixing with
disappointment and jealousy. There
is no cure for those hormones but time. He has been doing better,
though, and I've had no problem with
him. Honestly probably the best lesson for him would be to impress.
He'd have to work doubly hard and
please a dragonet." She smiled, considering it. "Of course all we can
do is give him the chance."
"Good good," Janani replied, pleased to hear that he was doing as he
should and not stirring up more
trouble. "Next time you see him, tell him I wish to speak to him. I
will let him know that he can Stand but that
if he mistreats _any_ of the other candidates or weyrlings in the
future, well," she paused, "hopefully that will
not happen and we won't have to even consider such consequences. How
are our other candidates doing?" She
knew Qorri kept a close eye on many of them and helped settle in the
new ones when they arrived.
"No problems with chores getting done that I can see. We've got the
new arrivals finding their place and
figuring out how the Weyr works. Of course the older ones usually do
that for me." Qorri had to make up
for the surges in candidate levels thanks to the eggs, but the tithe
increase due to the hatching would
account for that as well.
"Excellent." she replied. "Perhaps I should pay a visit to the new
candidates, then again I often enjoy them
being a bit afraid of me, knowing that the eggs my dear Angdelouth
laid could very well decide the fate of
their future," she grinned a bit impishly. One had to get their kicks
however they could and for the moment,
she could enjoy the almost worshipful stares that the newly arrived
candidates cast her way. It made her
glow almost as golden as her dragon and she enjoyed the attention.
"Anything else we need to see to this morn?" she asked her headwoman.
"Along with that, though it doesn't always happen, sometimes they are
allowed to touch the eggs.
In past turns, it's proven helpful I think." Qorri thought it led to
less exuberant children on the sands
when hatching day came, since they had been more prepared.
"I think we can arrange that. I'll speak to Angdelouth. She's still
rather possessive right now about her eggs,
but given some time I know I can convince her to let the candidates
in. She's agreed to it in the past." Janani
recalled a few of those instances. Sometimes she and Angdelouth had
stayed and other times she had taken
her queen away so she would not utterly frighten the candidates. With
the way Angdelouth was acting this
time, she didn't think she was going to get her away from those eggs
until they hatched!
"That's all I have for the moment then since stores are adequate
except I need to get an up-to-date number
of who we're expecting this time around so I can ready enough visitor
quarters." She ticked that off her list.
Janani nodded, listing a few names she knew would likely come to the
hatching before moving to wrap up
their meeting since it seemed that their main business was done.
Once Qorri had some of the answers she wanted, she took her leave and headed off in search of the Weyrharper to share Janani's wishes. Some of her more enjoyable duties involved time spent with the Craftmasters of the Weyr.
