N'vanik

He looked up from his hidework and smiled. "Hey Meledei."

"Hey N'vanik.  I've got those copies you wanted."  Meledei held out
the small stack for him to take.

"Thanks." He put the stack on one of the cleaner parts of his desk.

Meledei nodded. "Okay.  Catch you later."  Then turned to go.

"Do you have a few minutes?"

Meledei stopped then turned and shrugged.  "Sure, what's on your mind?"

"What do you think of Janani?" he asked.

Oh, was that it?  Meledei shrugged again.  "I like her."

"You've worked with her more than anyone. Do you think she'll be a
good Weyrwoman?" Not that he could do anything about it at this point,
but he wanted Meledei's opinion.

"She takes the time to teach me what I'm supposed to no, to guide me
but doesn't nag or hover to much, she seems to care about the people
here even though she's not _from_ here.  She's smart, quick thinking,
and stubborn."  Meledei grinned.  "I would say yeah."

He smiled. "Good, cause you're stuck with her. And you're stuck with
me too, until the next Flight anyway." That was far enough away that
he wasn't going to let himself worry about it.

"I didn't mind getting stuck with you the first time.  Don't mind it
now."  Meledei assured him. "And I don't mind getting stuck with her."

"Good. It's not that I doubt her, it's just ..." He shrugged. "I don't
know her well."

"I think she's been good for the Weyr.  And she'll still be good for it."

"Yeah. I hope it'll be ..." He searched for the right words, "easier
with her than it was with Trae."

Meledei barely managed to keep from snorting. "Yeah."

"You didn't like her, did you? Traelyn."

Meledei paused, then shook her head.  "Not really."

N'vanik sighed. "There were times I didn't like her much either. Even
now, there's some days I miss her, and other days I'm glad she's
gone." Maybe it was cruel, but it was the truth.

Meledei nodded, glad he was letting out his feelings and willing to
listen as long as he wanted.

"I wanted her out of my life. I guess I got what I wanted."

Meledei frowned.  "I hope you don't blame yourself."

"Maybe a better man would have noticed. Would have been able to do
something about it." He knew better than to blame himself, but he
couldn't help wondering if he might have been able to do something.

Meledei shook her head.  "You keep saying that to yourself and you'll wind
up just like her.  This isn't something that happens a lot.  It's nothing
something you can prepare yourself for or look for.  You're not a healer
and you shouldn't blame yourself over something you can't control.  She
probably did her best to hide it from you until the very end when she
couldn't hide it any longer."

"I'm so pissed at her for hiding it from me. More proof I didn't mean
enough to her." In some ways that was the worst of it, that she'd been
in such pain and hadn't reached out to him.

Meledei shifted, unsure what to say.  She couldn't blame Traelyn for not
attaching to him...after all, he had a Weyrmate.  Why would it matter if
she cared for him as other than a Weyrleader?  "Well, you have someone
else now, someone who will be better than her."

"I hope so. I'd like to have a partner instead of someone I just have
to deal with." Since he didn't have a history with Janani, this was a
chance for a fresh start.

"I think Janani will be good for the Weyr.  And for you.  She seems like
the sort you can have a good partnership with."  At least, Meledei thought
so.  Would he? She hoped she was proved right.

"Time will tell, I guess."

"Yeah, time will tell."
