Y'gel

Y'gel

"So, how's our big patient doing?" Roldar asked as he poked his head
into the back rooms where he knew Y'gel would be. "His rider is making
a speedy recovery after that scoring, thank Faranth, but all he's
worried about is hearing from _you_ how Uneith is actually doing."
Roldar leaned against the doorway with an amused look on his face. "He
swore he was coming back here to find you himself if I didn't go and
get answers, so rather than end up with him back on my cots for days,
I figured I'd come check. Though, truth be told, I don't know why he
can't just ask Uneith!"

"Well I can come talk to him." Y'gel smiled. "All he's going to get
from Uneith is confusion at this point. Truth be told he could have
just had Uneith bespeak Aug to get me over there. So it sounds like
they're both a little out of it."

"Klah?" he said holding up the pitcher.

"Please," Roldar replied with a grateful smile, "And aye, he's still
in considerable pain and not quite all together yet. I wanted to try
and ease his mind so he would actually _rest_ the way I told him to."
Roldar shook his head, "No offense to you and yours, but sometimes
riders are the _worst_ patients, refusing to focus on their own
healing because they are too worried about their dragons." He held up
his hand to forestall any comments, "I know the bond is strong, but it
does neither any good to make themselves worse for the worrying."

Y'gel poured the steaming beverage into a waiting cup and handed it to
Roldar. "Yes," he said "It's a mutual issue. Dragon's are so concerned
about their riders we have to constantly reassure them. Greens
especially." He shook his head. "They can't retain the information for
more than an hour or two and then they're asking for reassurance
again."

Roldar chuckled as he accepted the drink. "I've had patients who've
lost memories of things, but I must say the dragons' lack of retention
could get tiresome very quickly."

"Yes, well we have healers and dragon's in place to deal with it most
of the time." He poured. "I think Aughashyth is as much a healer as I
am at times."

"I'm sure it helps the other dragons to have one of their own working
with them." Roldar knew only the briefest hint of what it might be
like to have a dragon thanks to his little bronze firelizard, who was
conveniently absent at the moment.

"Oh yes." he smiled "I really couldn't do it without him. Can you
imagine trying to calm an injured dragon when her rider is
unconscious? I _have_ to have Aug there to help communicate."

Roldar shook his head. "That's why I'm glad you're here. I've spent
most of my life tending to sick people, but until I came here I never
imagined what it would be like to treat a _dragon_. I wouldn't hardly
know where to begin if I had to do that on my own."

Y'gel winked and tapped the side of his nose. "Most of the underlying
theory is very similar and would translate. There are a few very
important exceptions. No fellis... ever... It's toxic to dragons."

"That much I learned almost the first day I stepped into the
infirmary," Roldar chuckled, "I guess all the other healers wanted to
make sure I didn't make a catastrophic blunder. It's more the
inability for the dragons to truly speak, though I've treated patients
who couldn't answer my questions either, so, yes, I imagine in lots of
ways it is very much the same."

He shook his head "I don't know how you handle so many patients. The
shear volume boggles the mind."

"There are times it can get overwhelming, tis true. Most days, I just
plod on forward. Threadfall days are the most difficult as the sheer
volume increases nearly tenfold on those days, but there's hardly ever
a dull moment, even on the most serene of days." Roldar actually
enjoyed the work, the fact that it kept him busy. In the past he might
not have appreciated things the same, but the way his life had changed
had changed him as well. Now, with no one but himself to tend to, he
found he had far more time then he even knew what to do with. He'd
actually dabbled in a few other crafts here and there since arriving
at the Weyr if only to keep his hands from being idle in the times
when he wasn't busy seeing patients.

Y'gel nodded. He knew that for himself. There were almost as many
injured dragons as there were riders. He came off those days so tired
he could hardly think. Though he wasn't seeing as many injuries these
days as he was in the first turn of the current pass. Experienced
dragonriders made fewer mistakes. Still there was luck involved and
sometimes a rider got unlucky.

"Uneith really is doing quite well considering. But he's been sleeping
a lot. Did you want me to come talk to his rider now?"

"That would be wonderful," Roldar replied. "I'll take you to him."

Y'gel rose to his feet and smiled. "After you," he said.

Roldar led the way out of the office.
