N'vanik

N'vanik

N'vanik walked up to Rhosyn with a smile. He'd needed an excuse to
visit and a Hatching was the best kind of excuse. "Congratulations."

She had done her best to be appropriately attired, even though it was hot.
In the end, Rhosyn had compromised, wearing a thin dress with a long skirt.
Her hair was all done up, though. Turning at a voice she recognized, she tried to hide her first reaction to N'vanik's greeting. "Thank you, Weyrleader," she acknowledged, openly eyeing him. "So nice to see you."

His smile tilted into a smirk. "Nice to see you too."

"You look nice. And how have things been since I last saw you?" She'd
tried her darndest to keep up with any rumors concerning him, but there
hadn't been any lately.

"Good, though aside from Fall there hasn't been much excitement."
N'vanik took a sip of wine and watched her over the rim of his glass.

"Well I've been stuck, naturally. Though I've still been running around here." She wondered if that meant he hadn't been with anyone. That was curious. "And I trust your visit has been well so far? Can't say we slighted you in any way?"

He chuckled. "No, no slighting. I don't need much to make me happy. A
good view of the Hatching, some food and drink," he nodded to his
glass, "and that's about it. Well, I guess if you could throw in some
good company, that would really make my night."

"Well, before I allow you to completely monopolize my time, have you said
hello to K'sedel? Can't slight him, after all." Her eyebrows rose, enjoying
the back-and-forth. It wasn't often that she got to play.

N'vanik couldn't stop the little sigh before it escaped him. "I
suppose I should say hi. At least it's better than talking to a
holder." He turned to look for the other Weyrleader, taking a quick
glance around the crowd. Then he turned back to Rhosyn and shook a
finger at her. "You better not sneak off without me. I need someone to
dance with." A little flutter of fear went through him. Would she
reject him? Was this all just a tease? He didn't used to be this
nervous, but the way Traelyn treated him had damaged his confidence.

"I used to be a holder." The look on her face was inscrutable, but she
waited for him to go as she gestured for a drudge, looking for a piece
of cheese on his tray.

Obviously dismissed, N'vanik went to find K'sedel. When he was
finished talking to him, he found reasons to stall. N'vanik ate a
little, refilled his glass, talked to a few other riders. The harpers
had been playing for a while when he finally made his way back to
Rhosyn.

She saw him coming and laughed inside her thoughts as she noticed
how slow he was walking. **Poor thing, it's like I slapped him** Lucky
for him, Rhosyn had been thinking about his visit and she wasn't going
to waste her time being angry. "So how about that dance then?"

A smile spread across his face and he offered his arm. "Of course."

She took it, following him to the dancing square. The harpers had struck
up a lively tune, which she was grateful for. She waited for him to lead,
not paying attention to those who might be watching since she had yet
to dance at this Weyr.

N'vanik swung them into step, his mood lightening a little. "So are
you just being polite, or do you actually want to dance with me?"

"Do you want the truth or what I tell all the Weyrleaders who ask me to
dance?" Her brow rose, but her smile said that she was enjoying herself.
Quickly, it was apparent that she was a quick dancer, though she preferred
the more boisterous ones to the classical forms of bowing and all that.

"I want the truth, Weyrwoman. No pretty lies." They swung close to the
stage and then away again.

"Truth is, I've been secretly wondering if you were going to come." Rhosyn's nasty habit of being honest reared its head.

That was exactly the kind of thing his ego needed to hear. "So I made
an impression on you last time."

"Mmmm...I guess you could call it that. Or maybe I just wanted to see if you'd work for it." Her eyes watched him, judging and thinking all at the same time.

"Ah, that's right. Golds like to be chased." He barely kept bitterness
out of his voice. They liked to be chased, and admired, and you were
lucky if they paid any real attention to you ... He had to remind
himself that Rhosyn was only teasing, and he was here to have a good
time.

When the dance was over, the song switched to a slower tune. She adjusted
herself, putting her arms around him and getting close. Looking up to see his eyes, Rhosyn found herself considering what she would allow. }:You know you want to:{
**And we ladies always get what we want, don't we?**
}:Of course:{

"It would be rude of me to disappear this early into the feast, so how long did you plan on staying?" At least, she could satisfy her curiosity and end the little fantasies that kept playing in her mind.

With the way she was looking at him, N'vanik's mood considerably improved. He leaned down to whisper in her ear, "As long as your hospitality allows."

"We'll see if you can..endure my good hosting then." The dance was over
and she took her leave, knowing she had to make nice with the other dignitaries, see the new weyrlings before they disappeared, and all those other things. She would see him later, though.
