Description: Meledei is having a bad day and N'vanik finds out why.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 9 of Turn 5
She was in a bad mood.
Which meant that most people just avoided her. It was all over her
face, her expression twisted, lips forced into what looked like might
be a permanent frowned. When she walked, it was with an air of
decision, like a dragon running after its prey. It would not be
pretty if someone got in her way, so they didn't.
Of course, hides did not wait for bad moods and records had to be
copied so Meledei did her work. She just didn't talk to anyone while
she did it. Any questions were generally responded to with a growl.
Maybe a polite growl, but a growl none the less.
Unfortunately, there are some people who are so dense. Firenza was one
of these people. She was so chipper and cheerful and she asked
questions. A lot of questions. This did not help matters. She was
supposed to be helping, it was her assignment for the day, but every
time she came by, nattering in that annoy manner of hers and asking
questions that she was supposed to already know the answers to, it
made the fire beneath the pot of water get hotter and hotter and
hotter. The water was boiling. And when a shadow appeared over her,
Meledei turned and snapped, "For Faranth's sake, Firenza, I don't have
time to answer your silly, nonsensical questions! Use that brain of
yours and figure it out yourself!"
"So you do have a temper." The voice definitely did not belong to Firenza.
Uh oh. Meledei looked up and stared at the man above her. No, it
wasn't Firenza. Quite the opposite, really. "Oh...sorry N'vanik.
I...thought you were someone else." Obviously.
N'vanik chuckled. "I came to give you a few more hides. I'm sure
you're thrilled about that."
"No, it's okay." Meledei motioned to the pile she was already working
on. "Just set it next to them and I'll get to them." She shifted in
her seat, unhappy at having yelled at the Weyrleader, even if she had
thought he was someone else.
N'vanik set the hides down. "This Firenza really that annoying, or are
you having a bad day?"
Meledei heaved a sigh. "A little of both." She admitted, turning her
eyes to the hides before her. "Mostly the second." She added in an
undertone.
"Did something happen?"
"You might say that." Meledei muttered, her hands clenching into
fists. Something had happened all right. She shook her head.
"It's..." Then she stopped and sighed. "It's...nothing."
N'vanik looked at her for a moment. "It doesn't sound like nothing."
The young goldrider glanced up at N'vanik. He wasn't going to give up
was it? "Just...a fight." She murmurs, the words barely
understandable. "That's all."
"A fight? Who could possibly be fighting with you?" Meledei was one of
the nicest people he'd ever met.
"A stupid bluerider who can't keep his pants tied." Meledei muttered,
her anger building up again. "That's who."
"F'gol is sleeping around on you?"
"/Slept/." Meledei stood up, taking with her a stack of records she
had completed and fairly slammed them in their proper places. "Not
sleeping. Slept. And now..." She trails off, tears stinging her
eyes as she turns back to the unfinished stack that sits waiting on
the table.
Oh, shards. He wasn't good with crying, and he also wasn't good with
monogamy stuff. "You think he might be doing it again?"
"It doesn't matter. He betrayed my trust. If he had just _told_
me...but he didn't. He snuck around, knew it wasn't right but did it
anyway." Meledei ran her arm across her eyes and sniffed. "So...so
much for that."
"Should I rough him up a little for you?"
"No." Meledei shook her head and heaved a sigh. "No. It's...over. And
there's no point in adding violence to this."
"I was joking. Mostly," N'vanik said. "I'm sure it hurts now, but
you'll find someone else. Someone that understands you."
"Yeah. I guess." But the problem was, Meledei wasn't in a relationship
to have _someone_...she loved F'gol. But now? Now...it was pointless.
How could she trust him? He'd broken that trust. Instead of coming to
her, he'd gone right behind her back. Even though she loved him, she
couldn't keep going in that relationship. If she couldn't trust it...the
relationship would never last. "I'd...better get back to work." She
muttered. N'vanik didn't understand. Couldn't. He was far more open
with his relationships than she ever would be. Perhaps she might have
been to if it hadn't been for the influence of her mother and the
specialness of what her parents had had. She wanted that for
herself...but evidently she wasn't going to get it with F'gol.
"I'm not good at this stuff, but I can listen. So if you need to talk
... I'm here." After spending most of his life bottling things up,
N'vanik had finally realized the value of having someone to talk to.
"Yeah. Thanks. I appreciate it...but...I need to get back to work."
Meledei turned away from N'vanik and reached out for the hides. Work
would get her mind off of...things. If only for a little while.
