U'das sent for J'ren as soon as he had been released from infirmary and he
had drafted two candidates to wash Zack. They had given him a sling. His
Score wasn't bad but it was in difficult place: right on his shoulder blade.
He was not allowed to move his arm for day or two, so the protective
numbweed crust wouldn't crack open.
He soon discovered how difficult being one armed was, when he tried to
remove rest of his flight-clothes.
J'ren rapped upon the door and waited for permission to enter before doing
so. He came before his wingleader and nodded politely to him. "You sent
for me, sir?"
"Yeah," U'das managed to get the boot fof and tossed it aside. "I'm sure you
noticed that me and Zack took a hit during the Fall," he said and gestured
his 'second in.
"Yes sir." He would have been hard pressed not to notice, but J'ren
couldn't stop in the middle of a Fall, the only way he would was if a dragon
was going down and needed a catch. Fortunately, that hadn't been the case
for U'das - and the scoring certainly could have been a lot worse.
"Well, Zack also sprained his wing, so we are grounded for ten to fourteen
days. That means that _you_ " he stabbed his finger at J'ren's direction,
"are going to lead the Wing in the air during that time."
"Yes sir." J'ren had heard the news of the injury so the declaration had
come as no surprise. He inclined his head, expression serious. "I shall
endeavour to lead wisely."
"Of course you do, or I would have done bad job in training you," U'das
said. He saw as his duty as wingleader to make sure the younger bronzeriders
got the experience they needed. He was not going to live forever and some of
them would take over the wing someday. Of course, he had not planned to get
Scored, it just happened, but he was not going to let the chance to offer
J'ren some more leadership experience slip past.
J'ren's lips quirked upward a bit. "Do you have plans you wish to implement
for training sessions during your hiatus or would you prefer that I do
them?" The bronzerider queried, eyebrows arched upward. It was a good
opportunity for him, he knew that as well as his wingleader did. A chance
to prove himself.
"I had no special plans," U'das replied. "Feel free to come up with your
own," He gave an airy wave with his hand.
"Yes sir. I will sir." J'ren gave a sharp nod, but already his expression
was thoughtful, as if drawing up plans in his mind. "Is there anything else
you wish of me?"
"No, keep good care of the wing and trust your own abilities," U'das said.
He gave a lopsided, self-ironic grin. "I could load you with tons of
friendly, well-meaning and annoying advices, but you should be allowed to
make your own mistakes."
"Yes sir. I will sir." J'ren grinned. "And you be sure to take care of
yourself. And...hopefully I won't make _too_ many mistakes!"
"No, you won't," U'das has faith in his Second.
