Why Would We Be Different?

Writers: Eimi, Paula
Date Posted: 22nd October 2010

Characters: Sabonus, Uetia
Description: Sabonus and Uetia talk of an uncertain future after the excitement of the Queen's Rising
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 11, day 4 of Turn 5

Uetia watched the Gold flew over the Weyr, followed by large group of
bronzes. "There goes our new Weyrwoman, I wonder who will be the
Weyrleader?" she wondered and shivered a little. It felt almost like it
was Sirjath Rising.

"So long as it's not M'galec, I'll be happy," Sabonus murmured, stepping
up behind her. Gold Flights were powerful, and they could affect the
whole Weyr if one got too close. Or if one _wanted_ to be affected.
And the Candidate couldn't help but notice just how wonderful Uetia
smelled right then. "I think they're'll be no change."

"We'll find out in few candlemarks, "Uetia murmured. And wasn't Sabonus
looking handsome today. She let her admiring gaze linger across his
body.

"Well, I could go back to working on those shelves on the ship to get my
mind off things but..." He eyed the sky with a sly smile. "There isn't
anywhere you need to be right now, is there?"

Uetia looked around. "I don't thing there anyplace where anyone is
supposed to be right now," she replied slowly. All around them, pairs
were
sneaking off to the weyrs. She took a step closer to him.

"But I'm sure everyone has someplace they'd _like_ to be right now," he
grinned, heat coming into his eyes as he took another step towards her,
reaching out wrap his fingers around her waist.

"I know where I want to be and it's got furs on it," Uetia grinned,
wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him soundly.

"Well, we better hurry, or I just might start pulling your clothes of
your body right here." He pulled at her tie to emphasize that he was
only half kidding. The blood was already rushing through his veins, as
it was many people in the Weyr at that moment.

"Let's hurry then," Uetia said, mentally calling in Sirjath to take them
to her weyr.

"Faranth's shell," Sabonus groaned, though a smile spread across his
face. "I can't imagine what it must be like for you in an actual
Flight!"

"About like this in ten fold," Uetia replied and lifted her face to look
at his.

"I think I'd die," he chuckled softly. His thumb caressed her bottom
lip as he thought about how wonderful it would be to experience that
with her. "But I'd die a happy man."

"Hah! You're healthy as a dragon, little exercise don't kill you," she
snorted.

He grinned, rather pleased with himself. "Well, that's true. Still, it
would be fun to know what it's like."

"Impress a dragon and you will know," Uetia said.

"Well, I might get that chance soon." He stretched his arms before
tucking them back behind his head. Shards, he felt good!

"Two months and we'll see," Uetia said. Her eyes narrowed. "And then
there's the weyrlinghood."

"There is. That will be maddening." Sabonus turned his head to look at
her. "You know... I don't expect you to wait. If I Impress, I mean."

"What? You want me to sleep around, while you toss and turn in that
narrow cot in weyrling barrack?" Uetia asked.

"No, I don't _want_ you to. It's just... a long time. And just because
I'm not free doesn't mean you don't have... needs..." He turned on his
side to face her, feeling this was important. "I don't want you to be
afraid. If something happens, I understand, and we'll get through it.
That's all I'm saying."

"That's easy to say now," Uetia said and stroked his face with her
finger tips. She did understand his point.

"But hey, you know, there's a chance I won't Impress. There's a chance
I'll _never_ Impress." Sabonus knew very well that some Candidates
never did find their lifemates, and while he had a reason to keep
trying, he also wanted to be realistic. It was something he was
devoting serious thought to, in fact.

"What are you going to do then?" Uetia asked, biting her lip. That
prospect didn't sound very good. Would he leave the Weyr? "Keep working
as
Tamah's assistant?"

"I've been thinking about it," he admitted, reaching for her hand.
"I've got my craft. But, I don't know if I wouldn't go a little nuts
being on land for the rest of my life. Being in the sky, at least I'd
have that wind in my face. But standing on a dock, watching ships come
in and out... I can't imagine that as the kind of life that I could be
happy with."

Uetia curled her fingers around his. She didn't want him to go. But she
also knew seacrafters, she knew them very well. If her mother had been
able to live with the separation, so could she.

Once he had knew he had her silent acceptance of the idea, it gave him
the confidence to go on. "There are plenty of ships that come in
desperate for a carpenter just for a few months. I don't have to go out
on a long voyage. Take a job now and then and work on the docks in
between. And you have you a dragon. You can meet me anywhere I put
into port. I can already imagine putting into harbor, and finding your
smiling face to greet me." Still holding her hand, he brushed his
knuckles against her lips, a perfect image already in his mind of them
spreading into a grin, her arms outstretched to welcome him. Kissing
those lips a hundred times...

"Well, if you put it that way..." Uetia said. "Shards, my family is
almost entirely made of seacrafters and their wives," she continued.
"With few dragonriders and one harper among the others." She also knew
that seacrafters didn't always come home from the sea. "Generations have
survived the life at sea. Why would we be different?" Besides,
dragonriders didn't always come back home too.

"Exactly," he smiled, glad she understood. It was a huge weight off his
shoulders to know that she accepted his decision. "And we're luckier
than most. We won't have the long separation without being able to see
each other. It will be so fun to surprise each other suddenly. And I'd
look for your green every time Thread fell."

"Stil, it would be easier if you Impressed," Uetia said and punched him
playfully at the shoulder.

He feigned injury as he rubbed his shoulder, pouting slightly. "It
ain't like I'm not going to try."

"You need a big bronze," she said appraisingly. "A smaller hatchling
would be intimitated of you."

"Hmmmm," he hummed rolling her over on her back and hovering over her.
"Am I really so intimidating?"

"Not to me," Uetia smiled. She was large sized person too.

"Oh no? Not even a little? I have big hands, you know," he grinned
holding up one and flexing his fingers menacingly.

Uetia snorted. "Go to pick on someone smaller," she grinned.

"I know where you're ticklish." Sabous reached down to her side,
drumming his fingers along her skin.

"Oh, you evil man. I warn you, I have six brothers, I know all the
sensitive spots," Uetia has a threat of her own.

But there was one protection he was afforded over any of her brothers.
"You don't want to do any damage to my sensitive spot, now. Not if you
want to have children some day."

"A point for you," Uetia said and nuzzled bit closer to him.
