K'sedel

The light from a lamp fell across Angshel's bed. He didn't mind,
it was warm and comforting, just like the Weyr he had landed himself in
seemed to be. At least everyone so far had been kind to the slight boy,
unlike what he had escaped. He glanced down at his plastered arm. It was
long from healing but at least he could sit up now without much pain from
his various internal injuries. And the Healers weren't giving him so much
Fellis juice.

Angshel couldn't believe his luck in actually getting to the Weyr. And to
be surrounded by dragonriders! Who would have thought it? He found it
hard not to stare at the injured men and women around him. These people were his heros. Across the room he noticed a new face, walking in his direction.

The Weyrleader paused briefly to check that the lad in the bed was indeed
the one he wanted to speak to. Normally he'd leave this to the Healers and his 'second, but when the injuries were supposed to be this bad it was worth a few moments of his time.

Angshel didn't dare glance up at the man. He looked important. Fumbling
nervously with the corner of a bed fur, he waited for him to speak. All the fears of being forced back to his Hold raced through the boy's mind. If this was the Weyrleader, he'd better make a good impression. If only he knew just how to do that!

"Angshel?"

His mouth had gone too dry to talk, so he merely nodded. He didn't dare
look the man in the face, so he studied his hands instead. They were
tanned, like most people here, and looked like they had been used. Honest
hands, maybe he wasn't going to be a bad sort at all.

"I'm just here to see that everything is okay, and to sort out getting word to your family." Purposely K'sedel didn't introduce himself as he thought that might make the lad clam up.

"Oh?" Maybe this wasn't the Weyrleader. "Are you one of the Healers?"

"No, but I am in charge here," came the answer. "Do you want to tell me
where your parents live? They must be worried about you."

"I don't know my da...he left us when I was real little. My mother...if I
tell you they're going to send me back. I'll be killed if I go back!"

"Nobody will make you go back. We don't turn anybody away who is in need of help," K'sedel hoped his words were reassuring. "All we need to do is tell your mother where you are, and that you are safe, and have a place here."

"Really? I'm safe?" His face lit up with a smile. Could this man be
truthful? His mind began to whirl, thinking of living in the Weyr. And of finally being safe.

"You have my word as a bronzerider and Weyrleader of that lad, if you want
to stay, and are willing to work or craft here, then you'll have a place."

Angshel almost passed out with joy at K'sedel's words. So he_was_the
Weyrleader as well. He sat up to exclaim, "oh, don't you worry about me and work. I've worked me whole life, I've been a drudge, see, and....did you say I can craft here too? Y'mean, I can be something besides just a
drudge?"

"If that's what you want. But we may need your mother to give permission
for a craft."

"My mother..." Angshel thought of something. "If she wanted to, could my
mother come and live at the Weyr too?"

"That could be organised. But you'd need to tell us where your home is."
K'sedel was beginning to press the issue. It couldn't be too far from the
Weyr given where he was found, but he needed the lad to tell him where it
was.

Seeing he was beginning to press his issue, he blurted out, "Blue Mountain
Hold. I'm from Blue Mountain. And please, if you talk to my mother, tell
her that I love her and really miss her. But I can't go back."

"We'll get a message to her, and I'm sure the healers will get you a hide if you want to write your own letter."

Angshel settled back, comforted by K'sedel's words.
