Corowal reviewed her file once more while he waited her. She was new
to the hold and he wanted to interview her before trusting her with
new fosterlings. Of course, he would have let Sarban or the New
Headwoman deal with her, but he liked to meet people himself and ofted
did things that other Lord Holder's delegated to their staff.
He heard a knock. "Please, come in," he called, watching curiously the
woman who entered.
Lisadi had received the message that invited her to Lord Corowal's
chambers. She had to admit, she was a tad nervous, and Lisadi was not
really the nervous type. She wasn't entirely certain she knew what the
Lord Holder was hoping for out of this meeting, but whatever it was
Lisadi hoped to show him that she was a valuable asset to his Hold.
Knocking on the door, she heard the voice call out. Entering, wearing
one of her finer dresses, Lisadi paused just inside the doorway and
gave him a curtsy and nodded her head in deference to his position.
"Lord Corowal. I am Lisadi." She stated, her voice clear and direct.
She raised her eyes and her body and waited for him to take the lead.
"Well met, Lisadi. Please take a seat," Corowal got up and pulled her
a chair. "Welcome to the Emerald Falls hold. Have you settled in?"
"Thank you," Lisadi replied in answer to his welcome and his offer of
a chair. Settling into the seat she smiled in his direction.
"I'm still adjusting a bit to the changes from my old life to this new
life, but I feel I'm settling in well. Thank you for asking." Lisadi
folded her hands in her lap, relaxed yet still a bit on the formal
side as she knew that Corowal's status dictated such demeanor. Not
wishing to talk out of turn, she waited to see what else he might wish
to know or say.
Corowal returned behind his desk. "You're a fostermother, right?" it
was more statement than question. "With very good recommendations."
"Yes, yes I am." Lisadi replied, "I worked with many of the children
from my previous home." She was pleased to hear that her friends had
sent their recommendations. Was this just a cursory interview of all
new arrivals, or was there something more to this meeting, she
wondered.
"How good are you with difficult children?" Corowal asked, approaching
the subject.
Lisadi contemplated his question. "I have helped many children. No
child is truly difficult, my lord, if you can learn what they respond
to and what they need and desire. May I ask what kind of difficulties
you perceive these children you refer to as having?"
"You have probably heard about the fire in Red Rush hold? The fire
left few children orphaned and we have been looking for placement for
them. They have lost their home and their family, so I'm talking about
traumatized children. On of them was injured in the fire and it's left
a permanent scars on her," Corowal explained the situation.
Lisadi's heart seemed to flood with her emotions at his words. She had
heard of the fire, but it had not effected her until now. Now, knowing
that so many children had lost their loved ones, made her ache for
them.
"My lord, I would be honored to do what I can to help any of the
children. I know my own share of tragedies, which I believe will can
make understanding others' loss much easier. How would you like me to
help?"
"I would like you take this two as your fosterlings," Corowal replied
and slid two reports across the table to her. "Dareera is four turns
old little girl, who was injured in fire and now ready to be released
from infirmary. She does have an uncle who acts as her guardian, but
he's crafter and works long hours in the Harper Hall construction
site. Trewlin is seven Turns old boy, who lost his whole family in the
fire. Dareera only needs fostermother at day time. Trewlin needs
someone for permanently." He looked her, "If you agreed to take them,
you'll be contracted by the Hold."
Lisadi glanced down at the reports he had slid in front of her.
Gingerly she picked them up, and in an instant she knew she could
never turn these two children away. They _needed_ her, perhaps as much
as she needed to feel needed once more.
Sitting the document back onto the desk, she turned her eyes to the
Lord Holder. "I would be honored to be entrusted with their care, my
lord."
"Excellent! Thank you, Lisadi. Here is the standard fostering contract.
If you want some changes made to it before signing, please contact
Steward Sarban," Corowal looked delighted and handed her a hide.
Lisadi leaned over the new hide, even as she spoke, "I've met Sarban.
He was kind enough to show me around the day I arrived." She couldn't
help but smile as she recalled that encounter. Sarban had been very
kind to her.
"I accept, Lord Corowal." Picking up the writing tool, Lisadi signed
her name onto the document. "Do you know where I can find Dareera and
Trewlin now? I would like to introduce myself to them and see about
getting them settled in as soon as possible."
"Dareera is still at the infirmary, Trewlin should be on harper
classes," Corowal told her. "Miranek will tell you details of
Dareera's condition."
"I will go to speak with Miranek this morn, My Lord, and I will be
ready to see Trewlin as soon as he has a break in his classes. Is
there anything else I can do for you, My Lord?" Lisadi asked the Lord
Holder.
"Just take care of those two little ones. That should be a task
enough," Corowal said, and got up to escort her out. "You're a welcome
addition to this hold."
Lisadi followed him out. Her mind already thinking of the two children
who had been given into her care. "Thank you, my lord." With a final
inclination of her head towards the Lord Holder, Lisadi was soon off
on her way to meet her new charges.
