I will come back

Writers: Eimi, Paula

Characters: Sabonus, Uetia
Description: Sabonus takes some time to talk to Uetia before a Fall
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 11 of Turn 5

"I have some klah for you," Sabonus said as he held out a mug to the
greenrider. The wings weren't quite ready to lift off yet, but the riders
were gathering in their designated areas. He had already
finished delivering firestone sacks to the waiting riders and had a few
minutes before he would be expected to take up his shovel again.

"Thank's," Uetia replied and flashed a smile, taking the mug.
Her attention was on the sky above her.

His eyes followed hers upwards, wondering what might have caught her
attention. "Another bright sunny day in River Bluff."

"Yes. I hope the wind stays constant. I hate erratic winds," Uetia remarked.

Sabonus had no experience with erratic winds in the sky, but he was too
well aware of what they could do to a boat. He hated knowing she was
going into danger in a place he couldn't follow. Reaching for her hand,
he just nodded, his eyes searching for any clouds that might be an
indication of how the winds were blowing at higher altitudes.

"Cross winds are the worst, you never know which direction the Thread is
coming from," she continued her grumbling.

"Well, you'll have a whole wing that's got your back." It suddenly struck
him as very ironic. Having grown up with the sea, he knew how
wives were prone to worry about their husbands going out in rough winds.
It was rare for a seacrafter to be on the other side.

"Yeah, and Sirjath, who's a good flyer," Uetia patted her dragon's neck
fondly. She drained the mug and handed it empty back to him.

He took it with his other hand and leaned back against her lifemate's
shoulder, pulling her back against the green alongside him. "So how
long will you be up there this time? Just one rotation?"

Uetia nodded. "About two candlemarks."

"That shouldn't be too bad." And he'd be busy shoveling firestone and
carting it up to be bagged. "It should go by fast."

"It usually goes. Good thing I go up in the first half. Waiting your turn
is the worst part."

"Aye, I'd believe it. Better to get it over with." The soon she went up,
the sooner she'd be down and he could relax. "It's easier for us on the
ground, too."

"I bet it is," Uetia nodded.

"Well, who knows, maybe in another Hatching or two, I'll have your back
too." He brought her hand up to his lips and kissed it lightly, putting
on a cheerful smile he didn't quite feel.

"I hope so too," her lips turned up to a slightly naughty smile when she
thought how nice it would share mating flights with him.

"I know that look," said with an accusing smile. "If I hadn't watched you
put away your breakfast this morning, I would think you're hungry
for something."

"There are many kind of hungers," she said and reminded herself that she
should concentrate her mind to the coming Fall.

Soon both their minds would be consumed by the Fall. There was no
escaping that. But Sabonus leaned in to kiss her with the intent of
reminding her what was worth living, and perhaps worth dying, for.
"You'll be careful up there," he whispered when their lips parted.

"I will. Look, I got to go, the wingsecond is signaling," Uetia said.

"Yeah," he nodded, knowing that if she was being called then they would be
looking for him soon too. "I'll see you tonight."

"Yes, we will see," Uetia answered with the weight on the word will.
