"Scorch it!" Uetia cursed when she examined her wher-hide jacket. She and
Sabonus were just hanging around in her weyr, while she was checking her
flight-gear. "It's got a hole in it!" it looked like piece of Thread had
gotten into it. "When did that happen?"
Sabonus frowned thoughtfully as he lightly touched his finger to the hole.
"That was a close one." He didn't like that at all.
Uetia was more worried about the jacket than how close the Thread had
gotten. "I hope it can be fixed," she said.
He turned over the sleeve in his hand. "It's looking a bit worn. Don't
you think it's time for a new one?"
"NO!" the whole idea horrified her. "It's my favourite. I got it from my
brother," she pressed the jacket protectively against her chest.
"How many more times can it be repaired?" he asked, his eyebrows raised as
he pointed to a spot that had obviously been patched up more than once.
"I'm sure your brother won't mind."
"Well, I do," Uetia said. "I haven't seen him in Turns." Her eyes grew
larger when she realized something. "Shards, I don't even know if he knows
that I've Impressed. Last time we met I was dolphineer
apprentice." Her tone turned sad.
"Why's that?" It was rather odd that she would covet a jacket from a
beloved brother, and yet hadn't spoken to him in so long.
"I guess I have to tell you more about it. You do know that I have six
brothers, right? All seacrafters expect one?"
"I believe you mentioned it, yes." Of course that was a long time ago and
they weren't as close back then.
"Well, all my brother's are pretty much cut from same tree: big,
boisterous, salt water in their veins...execpt Ueltin. He was
different. Not by looks, no, he was just as big and brawny as rest of us.
By his personality. He was more sensitive, more pensive. He was only one
who ever thought that teaching spitting and arms wrestling to a girl-child
probably wasn't correct thing to do," Uetia smiled.
"Those are talents I didn't know you possessed." He was becoming
familiar with some of her more appealing skills. "Where is he now?"
"I wish I knew. When he announced that he is going to be harper, some of
us laughed at him and he became butt of the jokes. They weren't meant to
be mean, but he took an offence and basically just stopped talking with
some of his siblings." Uetia sighed. "I was eight at that time and didn't
really pay attention to what was going on. Well, father
said...nothing really, he doesn't talk much, but seemed to accept
Ueltin's choice and Uncle U'das took him to the Weyrharper. He later moved
to the harper hall."
Being a harper in a house of seacrafters couldn't be easy. The outsider
who had little to talk about. "You haven't tried to find him?"
"I did met him. When I was still apprentice and the Harper hall moved to
the Dolphin Cove weyr after the fire had destroyed the hall in Emerald
Falls hold. He came with the rest of the staff, and we kind of
reconnected," Uetia sighed. "It didn't last long, for he got assignment.
Before he left, he gave me this jacket. Said that he didn't need it where
he was going to."
"It sounds like he's important to you. You should find him again." How
hard could it be with a dragon, after all?
"I should. I just don't know where to begin. Somewhere warm, I'spose,
which leaves us whole northern coast of South continent," Uetia said. "He
was never really my favourite, not the way G'el was. I mean, G'el's simply
so funny. Very thoughless and mischievous and silly. Do you know what
Ueltin said when I told him that G'el Impressed a blue dragon?" Uetia's
lips curved into a smile with the memory.
Sabonus shook his head. He hadn't heard that part of the story yet.
"Well, lucky for him that it wasn't Green. Then there would have been two
air-heads. Now he has a dragon who can think for him," Uetia tried to turn
her voice to match her brother's melodic bass-voice.
"I don't see how that's funny." It wasn't that he hadn't heard the jokes
before, but he was a little offended for Uetia's sake. After all, wasn't
her lifemate a green? "I think greens can be very smart and thoughtful.
At least, from everything you've told me about Sirjath I get that
impression."
"The green's do have reputation for silliness," Uetia wasn't at least bit
offended for her lifemate.
**He still shouldn't have said it,** Sabonus thought, but decided to keep
that opinion to himself. "You could just ask at the Harper Hall where he
is."
"I could yes. It might be fun trip. Have ever been in Dolphin Cove Weyr?"
Uetia asked.
"I have, but we didn't stay long. I didn't get to go inside." One of the
drawbacks of being an apprentice. Someone had to stay with the ship, and
all the sailors had been itching to go to land. Especially in a Weyr!
"It's a great place, a real caldera-weyr, and not like this," the waive of
her hand included whole River Bluff Weyr, "Which doesn't even look like
weyr."
Sabonus wondered if she had liked it better there. "I hope that doesn't
mean you dislike River Bluff."
"No, I love it here. But you have to admit, they are totally different,"
Uetia said.
"Good, 'cause I'm starting to grow fond of the place." Of course, there
was one very special reason why, and he reminded her of that by leaning in
to give her a quick peck.
