Description: Two wingriders let their tempers get the better of them and have to be reminded of the consequences.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 8, day 2 of Turn 5
O'wel felt his dragon's upset even more keenly than he felt the
already swelling bruise on his face. It was the only thing that could
distract him from the anger he felt toward the other greenrider at the
moment and he ignored the man to focus on soothing his own green. He
heard S'naet doing the same. Unfortunately, the damage was done. O'wel
could see the Wingsecond headed their way, no doubt alerted by all the
commotion that something was going on.
"Would you two like to explain yourselves?" The words may be mild, but
their tone wasn't. Riders should not act like brawling brats at any time,
and they knew that.
S'naet shifted uncomfortably under the gaze of the Wingsecond. Truly,
he hadn't meant for things to get as out of hand as they had. It was
all O'wel's fault anyway, saying what he had. Sure, S'naet had been
the one to throw a punch, but the other greenrider had started it. Of
course, he knew that sort of defense would -not- go over well. "It was
a mistake, Wingsecond," he muttered darkly.
O'wel flushed, knowing that the incident was at least partly his
fault. He should have just walked away, but he'd been feeling out of
sorts all day long and S'naet's badgering was just one more irritant
than he could handle it seemed. Still, he probably shouldn't have said
what he had... "Yes, sir. A big misunderstanding."
"I see," K'reyel surveyed the pair. "A pretty mess you two have made out of
this. I won't make you explain yourselves, or perhaps I should, so that you
can let others see how stupid you have been. Neither of you are Weyrbrats
fighting over toys in the creche anymore."
Any residual anger O'wel felt was long gone by now as his flush was
deepened by his embarrassment. "It was my fault, sir." He volunteered,
taking the blame. "I got irritated with S'naet and said something... I
probably shouldn't have." Now that the heat of the moment had passed,
he didn't even really know why he'd been so annoyed by the other
dragonrider in the first place.
S'naet supposed he ought to apologize to O'wel for hitting him, but he
honestly didn't feel like it. The situation was the other greenrider's
fault and if he wanted to take the rightful blame for it, good for
him. He wasn't sorry he'd hit the man after what he'd said, though he
did feel bad about how upset it made their dragons.
"Look at your dragons, had this been more serious one or both of you could
be stood here now without them." He fell silent, letting that thought sink
in. They would both have seen what happened to those riders who had lost
their dragons in fall, they were only half the person they had once been.
O'wel blanched, swallowing down bile at the very thought that his
actions might have really harmed his beloved dragon. "Yes, sir. I'm
sorry, sir," he replied quietly.
For his part, S'naet felt a bit more chagrined. As angry as the other
greenrider had made him, he should have thought of his dragon first.
That was the primary purpose of a rider after all, to take care of his
dragon. "It won't happen again, sir." This time, his words and tone
were sincere. Of course, he didn't have any illusions that the two of
them would get off with a little lecture now and a he felt a renewed
surge of bitterness toward O'wel about whatever punishment was likely
in store.
"I hope so, and I also hope I've given the two of you something to think
about. Now," he paused for a moment. "I expect you to make sure your
dragons are okay, and you can expect to find the rosters for night watch
duty containing your names. I hope that will give you a little 'thinking'
time."
"Yes, Wingsecond." Both men answered and made their way to their
respective dragons, soothing left-over panic over the minor outbreak
of violence. O'wel vowed to himself that he would keep a closer watch
on his temper and his tongue in the future. S'naet made a mental note
to avoid the other greenrider as much as possible when not on duty
together. He hated night watch and completely blamed O'wel for the
situation, his acknowledgment of his own errors swept aside by
resentment over the outcome of the situation.
