"Weyrleader, thank you for receiving me", Sh'lua said when he entered the Weyrleader's office. The bluerider had wide grin on his face and he was followed by another rider.
"And you've brought a guest," N'vanik said with interest.
"This is C'niv, rider of green Aluaath, a Search rider from Rising Moon Weyr," Sh'lua introduced him. The greenrider was young, around twenties, and beautiful in that feminine way some male greenriders had.
"Nice to meet you, sir," the greenrider said.
"Nice to meet you," N'vanik replied. "I think I can guess the reason for this meeting." He was already assessing the greenrider.
Sh'lua nodded. "C'niv is willing to transferr here and take my spot as a Searchrider."
"Nice to meet you C'niv. How old are you? How long have you been a rider?" He knew he was being hard, but he was still angry about J'darin. The sharding sneak hadn't bothered to tell him that T'mahl wanted him as Weyrlingmaster. N'vanik wasn't going to get the short end this time.
"I'm twenty one and I've been rider for four Turns," C'niv replied, not letting the Weyrleader's tone frighten himself. Sh'lua had warned him that he was reclutant to let the bluerider go.
N'vanik turned to Sh'lua. "And you think he can replace you? You have twenty turns more experience."
"In time. Do you know how rare Search riders in my generation are?" Sh'lua replied.
"That's exactly why you're valuable."
"We all started from the bottom," Sh'lua said.
"Aluaath is talented, just bit unexperienced and tends to mark only those she is absolutely certain. Which mean that while she brings in less candidates, the higher procent of them Impresses in their first or second Standing," C'niv added on his and his dragon's behalf. He was starting to feel slighted. Like he was nothing!
N'vanik leaned back, deciding to shift the conversation. "Why do you want to move to Dolphin Cove?" he asked C'niv.
"I have cousin here, Chamia. I'm also trying to get over an end of a relationsship, and thought that change of scenery would do me good," the young man replied.
"Are you good in Fall?"
C'niv nodded,"Just a one minor scoring and that was right after graduation."
"You understand that you'll need to work harder here. We're still short on riders. We also need Candidates, but I'm more interested in quality than quantity." In both Hatchings since he became Weyrleader, Candidate numbers hadn't been an issue.
"That won't be problem," the young greenrider replied with confidence.
They were losing another experienced rider, getting a young one in return. N'vanik wanted more, but how much longer could he make Sh'lua wait? How many more demands could he put on him? In the simplest terms, N'vanik was getting a Searchrider to replace the one he was losing. He hoped, for the Weyr's sake, that C'niv was as good as he said he was. "And your Weyrleader is willing to let you transfer, C'niv?"
"Yes, he is. Rising Moon is in good situation when it comes to riders and candidates. In last Hatching we had 37 eggs and 64 candidates," C'niv said.
N'vanik sighed. "All right, Sh'lua. We made a deal and you came through on your part. As soon as I have a transfer hide from C'niv, I'll approve your transfer."
"Thank you, Weyrleader," Sh'lua said warmly.
