Briata

Briata

"I've not heard that song before." Briata spoke up once the man had finished playing. She smiled to him, a brownrider by his knots and with skill that told her he was harper trained. She stood there in the doorway, watching him, a bundle clasped in her arms. Briata had been playing delivery girl, but the sound of music coming from where she hadn't expected it intrigued her and she just had to follow to its source.

"It's one of my own." He smiled at the girl.

"It's lovely." At the invitation, Briata moved into the room. "What's it called?"

"Aerin's Tune." R'masu set his gitar down. "There was a trader girl at a Gather, and she inspired me. So full of life."

"I'm afraid while I enjoy singing, I have no talent for creating music." Briata never felt the desire to become a harper, though she did enjoy the entertainment and appreciated the education they provided. "Were you a harper before your Impression?"

"I still am, though now I can only pursue it in my spare time." He held his hand out to her. "R'masu."

Briata unhooked a hand from her bundle and shook the dragonriders. "Briata. Well met, R'masu. Spare time or no, your playing is lovely."

"Thank you." It was always nice to be complimented about his music. "I'd like to hear your voice some time, if you wouldn't mind." He was familiar with her name, but wasn't sure if he should mention anything.

"It's nothing special." Briata shook her head. "I can keep a tune and I sound okay, but I'm no harper. I usually stick to lullabyes."

"Ah, lullabyes. The first songs we hear." He smiled. "I should write one, someday. That would be a fine thing to pass on to the next generation."

"And when I have children, I can sing it to them." Briata smile brightened at the thought. How many children would she have? She wanted a lot, a big family...if only...no, she wasn't going to let her mind wander in that direction. "How many songs have you written?"

"Well ... I haven't really thought to count them. Most of them are just simple tunes." He'd been writing since he was an apprentice, clumsy ballads to girls he was sweet on or happy little tunes that popped into his head.

"You must have written quite a few then." Briata glanced down at the gitar. "Would you be willing to play me one more before I must return on my duty?"

R'masu chuckled. "I'm a performer as much as I am a composer. I'd love to play you another song. Happy, or sad?" He had quite a few of each.

"Something happy." Briata could do with more happy songs in her life. She decided to make herself comfortable, so moved over and sat in a chair where she could watch R'masu as he played.

"Hmm ..." He tilted his head, wondering which one to play. "All right. This one is better with a drum and a flute or two, but you'll get the idea." R'masu picked up his gitar and played one of his favourite dance songs, one he often played at Gathers.

Briata lips curled upward. Happy indeed. She could imagine what the drum would sound like. The flutes too. The music made her want to dance and her foot began to tap of its own volition. When it was over the young woman sighed softly. "Very nice. I'm sorry I didn't have a dance partner."

"I would oblige you, but I find it hard to play and dance at the same time." He smiled.

Briata couldn't help but giggle. "Yes, it is, it is indeed. I don't see a hands free gitar being made in the near future." Briata sighed, but her smile remained as she stood. "I should go. I still have to deliver this."

"I hope you'll stop by again some time, or say hello if you see me playing in the dining cavern." As was usually the case, this pleasant young woman seemed nothing like some of the wilder rumors about her.

"I think I will. I look forward to hearing you play." With a nod of her head, Briata turned and left the room. That had been a nice diversion, but she couldn't linger too long. Ah well.
