N'vanik

Scritching Oak to keep him interested, J'darin took up another hide and penned his second note in as many candlemarks. This one to N'vanik. Why bother setting up a meeting when he was just confirming their agreement? Oak settled while J'darin wrote.

N'vanik,

I have heard from T'mahl, and he has agreed to exchange my service for a trusted brownrider named Z'rin. T'mahl says he is Wingsecond material. I hope this arrangement suits you. And I hope Z'rin provides you and Dolphin Cove great service. I have loved these people as my own and they are worthy of great leadership. Be good to them, and they will be good to you, as I'm sure you've already learned. I wish you happiness here and I look for happiness in my own transfer.

J'darin

It was short and a little ..flowery... and he thought N'vanik would find it laughable but he found he didn't care. Anyone chosen by Nyith would be good for Dolphin Cove, and everyone involved would be happier if he were no longer ... around. To remind. It was best for everything, this trade. Though, he had to admit, being swapped for a brownrider galled a bit. But still.. it got him what he wanted, and what was he worth anyway? Scarred bronzerider that he was?

Attaching the note to Oak's leg, he smiled faintly. For what it was worth, the chapter of his life at Dolphin Cove was ending with that note.

"Take it to N'vanik, Oak. Hmm?" He pictured the Weyrleader in his mind and Oak chirped in understanding. He'd been to that man before.

A flutter and a chirp caught N'vanik's attention. He looked up and recognized the firelizard as J'darin's. He took the note from the little brown and set it down. Untrained firelizards were a hassle, but N'vanik didn't mind well behaved ones, and Oak was certainly one of those. N'vanik reached in his top drawer where he kept a small dish of dried meat to reward little messengers with. While Oak enjoyed his snack, N'vanik read the note.

The trade of a brownrider with no rank (he didn't miss the 'Wingsecond material' comment) for a former Weyrleader wasn't ideal, but N'vanik wasn't going to complain. He pulled out a blank hide.

J'darin,

Thank you and T'mahl for finding a replacement so quickly. I look forward to meeting Z'rin and seeing what he's made of.

I will do my best for Dolphin Cove, always, and I hope my best will be enough. I hope you'll be happy at Dragonsfall, despite the awful weather. I know I don't miss it. Take care of your family, Hasaarth, and yourself.

-Weyrleader N'vanik

They weren't empty words. He did hope that J'darin would be happy at Dragonsfall. J'darin hadn't seemed happy at all after being forced to give up the Weyrleadership, and N'vanik didn't blame him. Maybe taking care of his family was an excuse, and his transfer was really a way to leave the past behind him. N'vanik didn't blame him for that, either.

He coaxed Oak over and attached the message to the brown's leg. "Go back to your friend."

And so Oak did.

When J'darin read the message, he stopped. And read it again. That was very interesting. All in all, he thought it was a good ending.

He and N'vanik would probably always disagree on various ways to run a Weyr, but it seemed they genuinely wished each other happiness and success, and those were all too ...rare.... in a dragonrider's life during a Pass.

Nyith had chosen well, after all, and now, he was sure, so had he.
