N'vanik

N'vanik

Sh'lua had written the official transferr request as soon as he was able after his return from Dragonsfall. I proved to be rather hard to find a quiet moment. His family seemed to come and go constantly, all wanting to know who C'lua was doing. Shards, sometimes relatives were the most annoying people!

After sending the request, he just waited to be summoned to Weyrleader's office. When it came, he was there promtly.

When Sh'lua stepped in, N'vanik said, "Why don't you have a seat, Sh'lua."

Sh'lua nodded and took the seat.

"So you want to transfer to Dragonsfall." N'vanik looked at the hide Sh'lua had sent him.

"Yes, I do," the bluerider replied with serious tone.

N'vanik sighed. "I understand you wanting to be there for your son, but I can't lose another rider. Especially a Search rider."

Sh'lua's eyes narrowed. Well, he didn't expect it to be easy. "I came this close to losing my first born," he said and showed a very thin gap between his thumb and index finger. "He is blinded and hideously scarred. He needs me. I didn't make this decision lightly, Weyrleader."

"And I'm not making mine lightly, either. We need you." N'vanik hated that he had to do this. "Look, I'm not trying to be cruel, but we can't lose a Searchrider. I'll take you off all your other duties. You'll just have to show up to drills, and Fall and Search when there are eggs on the sands. Any time you're not doing that, you can spend time with your son." With the new drill schedule, that would be like adding extra restdays to each sevenday.

"That is very generous but I still want a transfer. What if it was your daughter? Wouldn't you want to be there, hundred percent?"

"Shardit!" He slammed his fist on the table. "Don't do this to me! This isn't about you, or me, or our kids. Dolphin Cove needs riders, especially Search riders. We need to be at full strength. _Pern_ needs us to be at full strength."

"I understand that, but I also think that my family and I have done lot for this Weyr and it's time for the weyr to give little something back," Sh'lua said, keeping his voice calm and even. He crossed his arms over his chest. The Weyrleader could always deny the transferr. In that case, he would just make a new request, as many times as necessary. He would wear him down.

"I think this Weyr has given too much already," N'vanik said more to himself than to Sh'lua. "Tell you what. I'll make you a deal. Find me a replacement, another Searchrider. I don't care which Weyr they're from, just someone competent. You do that, and I'll give you the transfer."

"All right," Sh'lua agreed. That wouldn't nesessary be easy. Of course, first thing he would go thru was his own family tree. He wondered if his son Sh'low would turn out to be Search rider and if the Weyrleader would accept him.

"Then it's a deal, Sh'lua."

"It's a deal," the bluerider confirmed. Now, where the shells he was going to find a Searchrider to replace him?
