Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 5
He knocked sharply on N'vanik's door, squaring his shoulders and his chin for what he expected to be a very uncomfortable meeting. He was glad that N'vanik had agreed to see him, however, and hoped that the Weyrleader would be as happy to see him gone as he was to _be_ going.
"Come in!" N'vanik called. Because of the way he'd asked and because it was J'darin, N'vanik thought the meeting should be in his office, rather than somewhere more casual.
J'darin did come in, and offered a polite, respectful nod to N'vanik. "Good day, Weyrleader. Thank you for seeing me." It was not a joke, or a way to poke fun, J'darin simply believed one should respect the Weyrleader, independent of personal considerations. It was a struggle, but it was right to support him. 'So why are you leaving, then, coward?' his mind added, but he ignored it, as he'd been doing for months.
"So what's on your mind, J'darin?"
No point in small talk. "I'd like your permission transfer to Dragonsfall. T'mahl says he has a place for me, and it is home. My mother and sister have been left alone by my father's death, and I want to take care of them. Someone has to, now that he's gone." He paused, struggling not to show the emotions he was wrestling. What a flaming coward he was! Hiding behind the women in his family!
"Sorry for your loss," N'vanik said. After a pause, he asked, "So your family lives at Dragonsfall?"
"Thank you." a faint smile went with it as he went on to explain. He didn't really miss his father though, not even a little, and that was scary.
"Well, they live at Amber Hills. I Impressed at Dragonsfall, and I'm actually hoping I can convince them to come live at the Weyr since they'll be left alone in the Hold otherwise. Even if they won't... its much closer and easier for me to watch over them from there, than here."
"I see." N'vanik leaned back in his chair. "You know we need experienced bronzeriders here."
J'darin nodded in agreement, though he wrestled with how to respond. He was an experienced bronzerider who was, really, just filling a spot in the Wing. And J'darin's experience, in particular, had already been made unwanted by the current Weyrleader, for whatever reasons. That was fine, it was N'vanik's choice. And he supported his right to the choice. But what to say though?
"I agree with you, N'vanik. And I know that I'm more experienced than our relatively young crop of bronzeriders. Though, I have to say, sometimes it seems less spare in the Wings. Perhaps that's just me, but the Wings feel ..solid." A nod of respect accompanied this statement. It just didn't feel like the dragons had keened as much, lately. "In spite of all that, I believe you'll find me easily replaceable. Why two solid blues could replace Hasaarth and I, or one good brown, I bet." A half smile, the words aimed at himself, not the man across the desk. And if D'cal could have heard _that_ he'd have dropped over in shock, most likely.
"Then I have a favor to ask: convince T'mahl to transfer one of his riders here. A bronzerider would be nice, but a brownrider will be fine. Someone that's been a rider the whole Pass." As well as the Wings were doing, they still needed more riders and any losses needed to be quickly replaced.
J'darin nodded, not really surprised. Its something he would have done, which shocked him And probably would have mortified N'vanik and made him change his mind immediately Oh well, even the most different of men could agree occasionally, where the safety of the Weyr was concerned. "Absolutely. I will be happy to do that, Weyrleader. I'm sure T'mahl has a rider he will be glad to send to you. You know those riders well, is there anyone in particular you'd ask for? I will send him a note by my flit later today. Assuming he is willing, then, you will approve my transfer?"
"Yeah, I'll approve the transfer. Just don't send me U'kaiah." After what he'd said about Talryne, N'vanik didn't think he'd be able to work with him.
J'darin chuckled dryly. "I doubt he'd come here anyway.... no matter what T'mahl said." Given what Trae had shared with him about the entire ... situation.... when she threw Nyith's Flight open, he doubted U'kaiah would come within miles of Dolphin Cove. After all, he had turned a chance to _lead_ this Weyr. Why would he come now?
On a different note, J'darin stood up and said with respect, "Thank you, N'vanik. I appreciate it I will contact T'mahl immediately."
N'vanik nodded. "Feel free to set your transfer date for any time after next Fall. And good luck. I hope things get better for you."
Another nod to this, and the bronzerider stepped outside to see about N'vanik's request. He might have said "So do I..." but it was hard to tell.
