Briata

Briata

Briata entered the dining hall and let her gaze play over the bodies that writhed inside. After a few moments, she found whom she was looking for. With her lips set into a smile that no one could accuse of not being genuine, the girl threaded her way around the people and furniture to approach her cousins. She hadn't been late - they must have been earlier. "Hello Talmina, Taljin."

"Briata!" Taljin said, a genuine smile of his own on his face as he looked at his beautiful cousin. "Sit down, it appears to be very informal here."

"It is very informal." Briata accepted the seat, glad that he had offered one beside him and not beside Talmina. "There are a lot of things that are more informal here than at the Hold."

Talmina had noticed. The first night when she'd gone to the bathing room to wash off the travel grime, she'd walked in on not only women, but men bathing _together_. She'd quickly excused herself and given herself a basin rinse, but it wasn't good enough for her tastes and she'd had to get up very early that morning to get a proper cleaning.

"How are you liking it here?" Taljin asked. If his sister wanted to sit in silence and sulk, he wasn't going to act like he noticed.

"It's nice, very different." Briata saw Talmina out of the corner of her eye and wished the girl would get in on the conversation, _try_ at least. She made sure to look at her female cousin so Talmina wouldn't feel like she was being left out, even if she was trying to. "It's quite a shock at first, but you get used to it." At least Talmina wouldn't have to worry about the dragon voices.

Taljin heard Talmina made a gagging sound, but it was hard for him to read her emotions from all the scarring. "I probably won't have to get used to it. It seems that there is a group heading towards the Hall in a sevenday and I'm going to be able to accompany them back to the Hold."

"Yes, that doesn't leave much time for getting used to things at all." Hopefully Talmina and Briata could live their own lives without running into each other too often. Weyrs were huge, and it would be easy to avoid one another. "But you should explore while you're here."

"Perhaps." he replied with a nod. He really didn't have much interest in the place. "I should focus on getting Talmina settled in though. Father said that you'd written and said there was a place for Talmina here?"

"Of course." Briata smiled to Talmina but only the scars smiled back. "We just need to go see the Headwoman."

"What for." It was the first thing Talmina had said all morning.

"Well, we have to check in with her. She asked you to come see her once you were here." Briata explained, her voice gentle. "She has to assign you your quarters and your position."

Talmina looked down at the table again. "Why can't I stay where I am now?" She didn't want to be assigned shared quarters. If the girls there tried to attack her like the ones at the Hold did, she'd have no place to hide.

"We're in guest quarters now, you'll get something smaller once I'm gone." Taljin replied. Did she really think she'd be left with something so large when it was just her?

"You'll have your own quarters." Briata stated as if she could read Talmina's mind. "The Headwoman is really nice." She glanced at Taljin and wished that things could have been different.

Talmina didn't care if she was nice or not, she didn't want to get to know the Headwoman. The less she stood out in people's minds the better. She just wanted to disappear here.

"Do you think she could get a job in the kitchens again?" He didn't want his sister downgraded to drudge status just because she didn't have any recommendation papers. He decided that he'd better stay long enough to attend this meeting with the Headwoman just to be sure.

"That's what I recommended, but it's not my decision to make." Briata was hoping something similar. "Of course, she might assign more than one job. I do one thing in the morning and another in the afternoon - it depends on what's needed."

Taljin nodded, somewhat satisfied, but still planning on going to the meeting just in case. "We'll just wait and see then."
