"Weyrleader?" G'len asked, knocking on N'vanik's open door and peering in. The man was not meeting with anyone, which was a good sign.
N'vanik set another hide on the stack and turned. "Hey, G'len. How are things?" He leaned against the side of the desk.
"Much better these past two sevendays," he replied with a grin. The Weyrlingmaster Third had not quite realized the heavy load he and L'pin were carrying until the new Weyrlingmaster had arrived to take on much of the responsibility. "I could kiss your feet for finding T'kob."
"No kissing outside of flights," N'vanik said.
G'len laughed, remembering his lifemate's recent mating flights. "But Tobereth isn't due to rise for another few months," he said, pretending to be regretful.
"Then I guess you'll have to wait until then to kiss my feet." N'vanik smiled.
"I don't think I'll remember in two months time, but we'll see." Of course, if Loseth did win Tobereth's flight again, there were other body parts G'len would rather kiss. In a slightly more serious tone he said, "I'm glad you found him. He really knows what he is doing." He had been cautious at first, considering the man came from another Weyr and was so young. However, T'kob had quickly proven that he had the experience and the attitude for the job.
"He had some experience, but I took a chance bringing him on. I'm glad he's working out so far." He hoped he'd made the right choice with T'kob. The more serious part of training was coming up for the junior weyrlings.
G'len nodded in agreement, his thoughts echoing the Weyrleader's. The true test of any Weyrling staff came when the weyrlings began jumping /between/. There was fortunately still some time before they came to that milestone. Shifting his thoughts back to the present the Weyrlingmaster Third cheerfully said, "I also came here to formally invite you to watch the weyrlings take their first flights. We will be gathering tomorrow at the thirteenth candlemark."
"First flights already? Time goes so fast." Shalith seemed to double in size every time he saw her. "Sure, I'd love to watch, although I don't know how much of it I can stay for."
"Of course. I just wanted to make sure you knew." Some riders enjoyed being there to watch the weyrlings take flight. It reminded them of the exhilaration of their their own experience. "The class will be divided into three groups. Cosani is in my group," he added.
"Lucky you." N'vanik chuckled.
"She is doing well in classes and exercises," G'len said, not sure if he detected some sarcasm in the Weyrleader's voice.
"No trouble?"
"Nothing out of the ordinary," G'len assured him. "Everyone needs some time to adjust."
"She's doing better than I did, then," N'vanik said.
"And you seem to have turned out pretty well," G'len joked. "Luckily for the rest of us." The Weyr knew what could happen with an unprepared Weyrleader. When N'vanik had arrived, from a different Weyr and with little leadership experience, many had worried about his ability to lead the Wings. Fortunately, he had proven himself.
N'vanik shrugged. "I get the Weyr through Fall. That's what matters."
"That, and hidework," he said, the stack on N'vanik's desk reminding him of the stacks awaiting him. "Well, I don't want to take up more of your time. I just wanted to make sure you knew about the first flights"
"Thanks. I'll stop by and stay for as much of it as I can." At the least, he wanted to see Cosani's first flight.
G'len nodded and stood. "See you tomorrow." He hoped the weyrlings would do him proud.
