Abrei refected that she had grown somewhat less stubborn over the past turn. After an afternoon of wincing every time she leaned back in her chair, Abrei invited Jynrek into her office, glared at him as if his life hung in the balance, swore him to secrecy and then turned her back on him and slid her tunic over her head.
Jynrek took one look at it and whistled. "Shards, Abrei. I'd ask what you've been doing lately, but uhh... well, I think that this is something I could live without knowing the details on."
The Weyrhealer ground her teeth but managed to keep her temper. "I bruise easily. Just tell me what it looks like."
There was a pause and she felt Jynrek's fingers lightly on her back. "Honestly? Like someone threw you into a wall. A couple times."
Since that was pretty much what had happened--and Abrei was fairly sure Jynrek knew it as well--there was nothing she could say. "Slight muscle bruising?"
"Mmmhmmm. Heat, rest, maybe a tea to stop inflamation." Jynrek hesitated. "Has R'han seen your back lately?"
Abrei pulled her tunic back down and glanced over her shoulder at Jynrek. "No."
Jynrek winced. "You uhh, might want to warn him first. I don't think this is something he wants to discover on accident, Abrei..."
"Oh, it can't be that bad," Abrei said grumpily, pushing her chair back in and stacking her files up. "It doesn't hurt _that_ badly, after all."
"Then you must _really_ bruise easily," Jynrek replied mildly, leaving Abrei wondering just how bad her back _did_ look. R'han had already given her the worried eyes more than once...
And that was how she ended up in front of the small mirror in R'han's weyr, craning her head over her shoulder and standing on tiptoe to get a look at how bad the bruising on her back really was. "Oh, shards..."
She jumped when the door opened, and when R'han walked in she was scrambling to get her tunic back over her head and straightened out. "Hello, R'han."
He didn't reply and instead stalked right over to her and started to work on the stays to her tunic. "You're hiding something..."
Subtlty was apparently not her greatest skill. Abrei slapped at his hands. "I'm hiding my naked body, as is considered fairly normal."
"Not around me it's not normal." R'han was way to nimble for her and managed the last of the stays. "Off."
She sighed and slipped the tunic off, turning so he could see her back. Her hair was still up, which gave him a clear view of the bruises spattered over her shoulders and back. "Don't get excited, I know it looks worse than it did last night--"
He let his fingers trail over each and every bruise. "I did this..."
"I helped," she retorted, moving towards the bathing room. "Though I will admit you're the only person capable of putting me into the sort of state where I'd enjoy getting bruised."
He followed her. "Thank you...I think!"
"It's not as bad as it looks," she continued, slipping out of the rest of her clothing and sliding into the warm water. "Jynrek told me to soak myself and to actually stay out of the infirmary on my day off tomorrow, so I suppose I'll just have to listen to him for once."
"Hmm...." His own clothing hit the floor and he slipped in behind her, kissing her shoulder. "Good advice. Did he give you some tea for the inflammation?"
"Yes, it's in a packet next to the bed." She left her hair pins in her hair and gave him a stern look over her shoulder. "If you even _think_ about taking my hair down, I'll see your back looks worse than mine does. I don't want to deal with wet hair _again_ today, thank you."
"I'd say you were no fun but then I'd be lying...." He kissed her back gently, his lips traveling over each and every bruise slowly.
"Well, next time you're feeling frisky, how about we find a nice _soft_ surface first?" Abrei tilted her head forward and let him rub the soreness from her shoulders--though it seemed like he was doing a little more kissing than anything else. "And no offering to let me be on top..."
He laughed. "Yes, dear..." He kissed another spot. "Does it hurt much?"
"Like most bruises do," she replied easily, her eyes drifting shut. "I'll be sleeping on my stomach tonight and probably don't want to lean back in my chair for a day or two, but after the broken leg I think I'll survive."
His hands reached around to cup her breasts. "I'll have to spoil you for a few days."
Abrei chuckled as she leaned back against him. "Your grasp on anatomy seems to be slipping again, R'han... would you like me to show you were my back is?" Not that he could do much to her back now that she had it resting against his chest...
"It's not slipping, I'm just easily distracted," He replied, nibbling on her ear, which was nicely exposed with her hair all up in pins.
She sighed in pleasure and let the warmth of the water and his slow caresses relax her. "I suppose I don't mind... I think I like being spoiled."
"Good, I'll have to do it more often..." As usual, his hands wandered. Certainly she deserved a break... but it was bloody _hard_ when she was there...in more ways than one.
For once she took his hands in hers and pulled them away from her body. "Before you spoil me any more, I want to talk to you a little. And I can't do it when you're distracting me like that."
"Hmm....that sounds serious..."
Abrei turned in his arms and smiled at him as she smoothed his hair from his face gently. "Not serious... I just want you to stop worrying about hurting me. I want to tell you why I was so scared."
He nodded soberly and leaned over to kiss her nose. "Tell me." He knew why--he just preferred to hear it from her lips and he knew she'd be upset if she knew U'val had told him.
"I got on the wrong side of a man who'd lost a mating flight once." It was easier to say than she'd imagined... of course, it wasn't the turns that had given her perspective as much as the man holding her. R'han's refusal to accept self pity from her had changed the way she viewed more than a few things. "It... wasn't enjoyable. I didn't know what to expect, and wasn't prepared for what it was. I didn't think it would be like that with you... but it was hard not to be nervous."
"I'm not sure if I should apologize or go find the cretin who scared you. Maybe both...or maybe I'm just glad you trust me enough and I'm different enough to not have brought your fears to the fore again."
Abrei kissed him lightly, her hands sliding around his waist and down to things that were a little less innocent. "I've learned a little about pleasure since then. And I do trust you. You know that."
He moaned into her mouth, the power of her words as heady as the power of her body. "Keep that up and I'm going to have to find an alternative way of sparing your back any discomfort..."
One thing she loved about being in the bathing pool was how easy it was to hook her legs around his hips. "Well, the way I see it you have two options... you can stay in here and do what we seem to want to do every morning... or you can take me to bed and see what you can figure out that doesn't involve me on my back..."
R'han didn't seem terribly interested in moving, and within a few moments, neither did Abrei.
When he finally came to his senses, R'han realized they were dangerously close to drowing in only feet of water and laughed, walking to the edge of the bathing pool. "I think we're safer on dry land for now..."
Abrei seemed distinctly uninterested in unwrapping herself from around his body or helping him in any other way. "If you tell me I have to stand up, I might hurt you."
"And _I'm_ supposed to be the old man?" He shook his head, found the stairs and _slowly_ got them out. "The whole bed's going to be a wet spot!" He laughed at his own joke and headed that way anyway.
Relenting, Abrei put her feet on the floor and stopped him before he could tumble both of them into his bed soaking wet. "Towels. Now." The look in her eyes held no room for argument, but her smile was amused. After more than six months she knew how to get around R'han. "And if you get them fast enough, I'll dry you off."
"Done..." That's what he liked--a woman who was good at creating decent _incentives_.
