"Hi again." N'vanik took Trae's arm and turned her for a kiss. He was beaming.
She allowed herself to linger a little longer than usual, enjoying the kiss before they broke it. "I don't think I've ever seen you so happy. Gonna let your guard down tonight?" she teased, grinning up at him.
He laughed. "Don't get used to it."
"And why not?"
"Because this is me." He winked.
The look she gave him was one of amused exasperation. "Did you see Cosani?" she asked, changing the subject.
"Yeah. I gave her a hug. For a second there, I thought she was gonna scream for help." He laughed.
And she could just see that! Traelyn laughed along with him, shaking her head. "The pair of you. There will be some very interesting Turns ahead."
"Yes. _Good_ Turns." He kissed her again.
"Mmmm. Especially if this clutch is of any indication."
"Yeah. A gold and _three_ bronzes!" He wrapped an arm around her waist. "A few more clutches like that, and we should be up to a decent number of riders." Then they wouldn't have to go begging to other Weyrs.
She leaned companionably against him. "If only Nyith rose more than once a Turn...." But now that they had another gold in the Weyr, the amount of dragons would certainly increase with time when she matured. They just had to be patient.
"At least I won't be out of a job anytime soon." He nudged her playfully.
Grinning, turned her head to look up at him. "No, you're good for a while," she teased back, bumping her hip lightly against his. Nyith would most likely choose Loseth again. She tended to be consistent in her choice of mates. But she wouldn't think that far ahead right now. "Nyith says that Loseth's keeping her warm up on the Heights."
"He's quite pleased with himself. And his mate."
"Forty healthy hatchlings.... They should be very pleased with their brood." Her fingers tightened slightly in his shirt. "He flew her quite well, she says."
"Oh, he knows it." N'vanik's eyes darkened a little.
Her smile was smug and coy when her eyes met his again.
"You think our guests would be too shocked if we made out right now?" he asked with a smirk.
"Yes. But maybe we can do that later."
He tilted his head. "Only maybe?"
Her dark eyes gleamed. "Want to make a date?"
He stepped back and lifted an eyebrow. "So now I have to _schedule_ time with my Weyrwoman?"
Her smile faded and her own brow rose slightly in turn, surprised at his sudden change in tone. "Please don't get snarly, N'vanik. Tonight's not a good night for that."
"No. I _thought_ it would be a good night for us to spend time together." What, was U'kaiah here? Did he still have to compete with him, right after their Hatching?
She blinked, honestly taken-aback. "I thought you were going to be with Talryne tonight." Just like she was going to be with B'ram.
"Yes, later. But it's _our_ Hatching." Did he really have to point that out?
Maybe she had misunderstood. "I know that. And we'll be spending practically the whole evening together in there. You, and me."
"And everyone else," he said. "So now I get to be your show piece. Part of a matched set. I guess that's better than nothing." Apparently, celebrating with him wasn't important unless it was part of the show.
Now she was irritated. What did he sharding expect from her? Grabbing his arm, she pulled him closer to the wall, away from the new weyrlings and bustling people. "How dare you put words in my mouth, N'vanik, _especially_ today of all days," she said quietly, but the expression in her eyes was a fierce one. "That's not what I think. You know I care about you. You know that. And you should know that I don't just see you as a part of a 'matched set'." Whatever that meant. "And if you still don't get that about me after two Turns of knowing me, then I honestly don't know what to say to you."
**That you won't just disappear when the formalities are over?** Yes, she did care, when it was convenient for her, when she bothered to think about what someone else wanted, instead of just what she wanted. But what good would bringing that up do? She would just get angrier, and she'd already put enough of a damper on the night. "Then let's go smile for the people," he said.
