The Weyrleader stuck his head around the Weyrlingmaster's office door, expecting to see J'an. Instead, he saw a much younger man, wearing the knots of the Weyrlingmaster's second.
"You must be M'galec," he said.
"Yes, Weyrleader," the bronzerider replied as he turned to face him fully. "J'an is out at the moment. How can I help you?"
"Its that time of the turn, we have seniors getting ready to graduate.
I was after provisional listings of wing placements from him," replied K'sedel. He knew full well that there would be a bigger meeting involving all his wingleaders and Tsaera to sort things out properly.
But it never hurt to be ahead of the game.
"Well, I believe he has the original copy of the provisional listing right here if you would like to look at it." He handed the Weyrleader a hyde that had obviously been scraped clean a few times. "I would offer to copy it for you, but healers are not known for their clear handwriting."
"That's not necessary," replied K'sedel, "I'll catch him later myself.
In the meantime, how are you settling in here?"
"Well, sir, thank you. Everyone has been very kind and helpful."
"Your weyr assignment is okay?" K'sedel made a mental note to check with the Headwoman if it wasn't. He couldn't have senior riders unhappy.
"It's just fine. My own bathing pool even. Of course you could just put a cot in a closet and that would serve just as well. I'm rarely in my room."
"And you've met the Weyrhealer I take it?" Having seen the man's transfer papers, K'sedel was well aware of his reputed skill as a surgeon.
M'galec smiled and nodded. "Yes, sir. She has added me to the duty roster as soon as I came. Seems she was in need of a surgeon."
"I had heard that," remarked K'sedel. "Though in a Weyr such as this, you can never have too many Healers."
"Well, that's what I came here for. I have battled the monster in the skies, but my real fight against Thread has alway been in the infirmary.
I'm greatful that I have been allowed that chance here."
"In that case I'm glad to have you in my Weyr. Hopefully we'll see the end of this pass without too many more accidents and fatalities."
M'galec nodded. "Yes, I think it is every healer's hope that someday they will not longer be needed."
"Or perhaps only needed for good things, like delivering babes."
The Second shrugged with an ironic chuckle. "Unfortunately I only deliver babies when something has gone wrong. No, Weyrleader, it is my sincere wish that someday I would be completely obsolete."
It would be difficult to agree with that statement when thread was falling, but K'sedel understood the sentiment. "I know what you mean." "Was there anything else I could help you with, sir? I have a few more minutes before the next class begins."
"Not at the moment." K'sedel smiled. "It was nice to meet you."
"And you too, Weyrleader. I'm looking forward to working with you in the future."
"And I with you."
