"Shards, love! I heard about the boar tearing _everything_ apart!" Fayne gasped as she burst into the room. Once she'd heard, she'd rushed home, wanting to check over every inch of her husband herself. She was in his arms in the next instant, her hands running over him, checking for bruises or cuts.
"Calm down, woman," Kiyan retorted, laughing as his wife knocked his papers to the desk in her frantic search for injuries. "The boar ripped the _garden_ apart, not your husband!"
"Well no one _told_ me that! What was I _supposed_ to think?" Her hands smoothed down his back to his waist, her hurried search finally slowing to more of a leisurely caressing.
Kiyan laughed and wrapped his arms around Fayne, pulling her tight against his chest. "You should have more faith in me, wife! I jumped right out of the way of that charging monster!"
"I'm glad you had the sense to!" She tilted her head up to give him a relieved kiss.
Maybe he needed to worry his wife more often. Kiyan enjoyed the kiss, letting his hands trace down her back and over her hips. "I think I like having you worried about my well being, Fayne," he murmured against her lips finally.
"I'm always worried about your well-being, my love. And it's not every day you get charged by a boar! Horrible beast...what if he had gouged you?"
"If he had gouged me, I certainly wouldn't be sitting here," Kiyan retorted. "Have you _seen_ one of those things charging? I'm surprised our Master Beastcrafter is still standing!"
"So am I," she murmured, resting her cheek against his chest. "I'm very glad you _both_ are in one piece. But the vineyard... How badly did the beast ruin it?"
"Not so badly..." Kiyan sighed. "A few vines torn up, but for the most part they kept it away from anything _truly_ valuable."
"That's a relief." Gently, she took his arm and pulled him with her to the couch.
"Is everything all right with you?" Kiyan asked in concern as he sat, not liking the serious expression on her face. "Nothing's gone wrong at the Hold, has it?"
"No, no. Nothing's wrong with the Hold. But...I did see Miranek again today..."
"Oh." Relief flowed through him, and sadness because he knew what was coming next. And no matter how many times he told Fayne that she was worth more to him than a dozen children, she couldn't seem to stop hoping. "What did he say?"
"Still not pregnant, Kiyan..."
Kiyan wrapped an arm around Fayne's shoulders, hugging her. "Maybe it's for the best, love."
She shook her head, her eyes fixed on her hands, which were clasped tightly in her lap.
"I'm serious, Fayne. I don't feel that my life is lacking anything!" He let his fingers brush over her hair, tracing down her cheek and to her chin. Raising her face, he met her eyes. "I am happy with our life, Fayne.
Without children."
She searched his eyes, her own troubled and sad. "But I _want_ them, love. I've wanted them since we wed...even before then. A daughter, or a son...to carry on your line and mine."
"Of course, but it's not the only thing you can be happy about! Look at what you've accomplished! You're the Headwoman of Emerald Falls Hold!"
"I know. And I'm not saying that it is the only thing...but..." She looked away. "But I've had my heart set on this for so long..." She felt a lump form in the back of her throat. "And I can't accept that it'll never happen for us..."
"Well, we'll keep trying then," Kiyan said, though silently he thought the chances of them having a child this late in their marriage were slim. "But I don't like seeing you so upset every month."
She stiffened. "How should I react to the news then, Kiyan?"
He winced as he realized that he wasn't making things better. "I just think you should... be glad for the things we do have instead of sad for the things we don't."
Fayne didn't reply, but her body relaxed just slightly against his. She wanted his children so badly...how could she give up the dream? How could she forget it and try not to think of it?
"Are you mad at me?" Kiyan asked, looking up at her with his patheticly sad eyes.
She sighed softly and summoned a small smile for him. "No, love..." How could she be, with those eyes of his?
