N'vanik pressed close against her, a hand running through her hair. He just couldn't seem to touch her enough. "This feels so ... right."
"Mmmmm..." she agreed drowsily, enjoying the soothing motions of his fingers.
"I'm starting to think this wasn't a mistake at all."
Slight irritation made her eyes flicker open. _Starting_ to? For Faranth's sake.... "You know," Traelyn murmured quietly, "when you say it was a mistake, you're also implying that Nyith made a mistake." She didn't want to hear it any more, not since U'kaiah had sneered his own thoughts on the matter to her those sevendays ago.
"I know. I don't mean to." He bent to press a kiss to her forehead. "It's just so hard to believe that I'm ... worth it. That I'm good enough." It hurt to admit, but he wanted to be honest.
She shifted, settling herself closer against him. "You've always had the potential, I think. Loseth knew the moment he hatched. The bronzes always know." Just like the golds did.
"But until now, I wasn't ready. This was the perfect chance at the perfect time." His hand trailed down her back. "With the perfect person."
"Hardly perfect," she smiled wryly, looking up at him.
"Perfect for me." He smiled back. "You're the only goldrider that ever understood me. That saw the good, not just the bad."
Gently she caressed her fingers down his chest. "Dolphin Cove could be a whole new start for you, if you let it. I'm the only one here who knows your history. Your past doesn't have to follow you here." Even though hers had, he could stop his from intruding on his life. Her nails drifted to his abdomen. "But maybe you've thought of that already."
"Yes ... And a new start for Dolphin Cove, too. I know I haven't been here, and I haven't lived through what people here have." N'vanik shifted to look at her. "And maybe I'm just being arrogant to think like this, but I think I understand Dolphin Cove. I know what it's like to struggle, I know what it's like to lose, to have other people think you're weak. I want to be strong. I want Dolphin Cove to be strong. I want _us_ to make it strong."
"You and I want the same thing," she replied, regarding him thoughtfully. As far as she was concerned, he wasn't being arrogant in finding commonality with the Weyr. She saw it as a good thing, and it would certainly help influence his decisions in the right directions. In helping making the Weyr stronger, he would become stronger both as a leader and as a man. "And we're off to a good start, I think. Forty eggs, and one of them a queen." Her eyes glinted rather smugly. "The Candidates will be lining up to be here."
"We'll have more than enough ambitious girls, that's for sure." His eyes grew a little distant. "My daughter will try for it, if she's anything like me. And I'm sure she is." His daughter, a goldrider? It was possible.
Today, anything seemed possible.
Her stilled hand began its idle caressing once again. "How is Cosani settling in?"
"She _says_ she's fine, but we both know that doesn't mean anything." He gave her a wry smile.
"Yes, she's very much like you," she murmured, a small, knowing grin twitching at her lips.
"Scary, isn't it?"
"What, that there's a female version of you wandering the corridors?"
N'vanik snorted. Then he thought of something and made a face. "Faranth's name, I hope she hasn't discovered boys yet."
"Or that they've discovered her?"
"I think she'd be more likely to scare them off." He chuckled.
Grinning openly now, she rolled him over. "She just needs to find one that'll match her in temperament."
"That's really _not_ something I want to think about."
"So what do you want to think about?" she asked, hovering over him.
"All those lovely eggs on the Sands." He traced her cheek, smiling. "And how they got there."
Smiling back at him, she leaned into the caress.
