Description: Corowal meets with the new Weyrleader.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 8 of Turn 4
Corowal watched the bronze dragon land on hold's courtyard. The great beast seemed to fill the whole open area. The news of the changes of Leadership had reached Emerald Falls too, and the Lord Holder was curious to meet the new Weyrleader. He had gotten well along with J'darin.
N'vanik slid off Loseth's neck easily and strode up to the Lord Holder. Formalities. Ugh. "Lord Corowal," he said, extending his hand. "Nice to meet you."
"Weyrleader, a pleasure. My duty to you and Loseth, was it?" Corowal replied to the greeting and gave the offered hand a firm shake.
"Yes." The huge bronze eyed the Lord Holder. "He says it's good that you know his name."
"It's common courtesy to know the names of those who risk their lives to protect us," Corowal replied.
"Do you know every dragon's name, then?" N'vanik's eyebrow lifted, teasing.
"No, that would be impossible. Just the leaders, just the leaders," Corowal replied with a smile.
"Well, that's more effort than some make, at least." And at least Corowal didn't look at him like he might catch something if he stood too close. N'vanik had encountered plenty of holders that turned their noses up at dragonriders.
"So, how are things in Dolphin Cove?" Corowal asked while he escorted his visitor to his office.
"They're good. They--we--have very capable riders."
Corowal noted the slip. He wondered if it was important or not. Probably not, settling in always took time. He guided his guest to his office. "Do you want refreshments?" he asked.
"Juice would be good." Shards, he just wanted this over with.
"So, anything new happening at the weyr I should be aware of?" Corowal asked when he pourted them the juice.
"I hear there's a new Weyrleader," N'vanik said dryly.
Corowal chuckled.
N'vanik took his glass and sipped at his juice. "It probably won't effect you in any way, but I took away the rule putting fifteen turn olds into the wings."
Corowal nodded. That probably meant few rumpled fifteen turns olds. "Gold flights mean eggs. Are you going to do Searches?" He asked.
"Of course. We'd appreciate anything you could do to encourage those Searched in your Hold to accept," N'vanik said. "I'd like the hatchlings to have as much choice as possible." **My hatchlings. Our hatchlings.** His and Loseth's, Nyith's and Trae's. They deserved to have the widest choice possible.
"Of course. Your riders are welcome to Search everywhere. But this time, try to search some boys too. I've noticed that unusually high number of girls has been Searched from Emerald Falls territories in the past," Corowal replied and added dryly.
N'vanik shrugged. "I wouldn't know anything about that." He thought of his daughter, though. He didn't blame the girls or the Searchriders if going to the Weyr got the girls out of a bad situation.
"Well, the situation here has improved during the past Turn," Corowal said. "So there's no longer need the rescues," he continued. He didn't all disapprove it, but it did depopulate his hold. Some of those girls had been in dreadful situations.
"I'll mention it to my riders, but we'll Search whoever is acceptable, boy or girl."
"Of course you do. I won't interfere with your right to Search," Corowal said, his tone soothingly. He didn't want to anger the new weyrleader.
"Of course not." N'vanik took another sip.
"I would like to invite you and your Weyrwoman to our Turn's over feast," Corowal said and offered him the official invitation. "All other weyrfolk and riders are welcome too."
"Unfortunately, I don't know if we'll have the time. Our Weyr is having a huge celebration. That's what happens when you have the Harper Hall sharing space with a Weyr," N'vanik said. "We both love parties."
"Don't we all?" Corowal asked rhetorically. He was not surprised by his answer.
"I'm sure we do." N'vanik was glad he a good reason not to go. At least at the Weyr he could be more himself, rather than trying to play a part in front of the Lord and his holders.
Corowal nodded. "I've been hoping to rebuild the hold's relationship to the weyr, that suffered during my predecessor's rule."
"As long as you do your duties with tithes, and ground crews, and allowing Search, I've got no quarrel with you," N'vanik said, playing with his glass.
"Then we should be on same page," Corowal said.
"Good." N'vanik smiled. "Let's keep it that way."
