Description: K'sedel praises R'harne for his work in drills and the pair talk.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 12, day 4 of Turn 4
Notes: Mentioned: Ciara
"Well done." It was a compliment from the Wingsecond after a good drill.
"That was a nice move from the pair of you."
"I think Guieth deserves all the credit," R'harne admitted ruefully. "I
was just a passenger, that time."
"But he had to have had some direction. It was quick thinking from the
pair of you." Especially in terms of rescue drills.
The brownrider shrugged. If the former Weyrleader, now Wingsecond,
wanted to praise him for something that Guieth should more properly get
the credit for, then what did it matter? "Well, thank you, then."
K'sedel nodded. "How's your weyrmate?" he asked, knowing that the
greenrider was friendly with his own Ciara.
R'harne nodded. "She's good. Good flying and lucky. We seem to need
both during a Pass. How's Ciara doing now?"
"Glad to be flying with her wing again. She thought she'd go crazy while
she was grounded."
"It's a battle to keep the dragons grounded," the brownrider agreed.
"When Thread falls I'm sure they're more single-minded than even in
mating flights. Guieth's been shocking both times we've been grounded."
The battle of wills was slightly easier when the dragon had to
consider the rider's injuries ... but if it was damage to dragon-hide
alone they were always ready to fly, no matter the cost to their own
health. That was their 'living for the moment' nature; it was both a
strength and a weakness.
"Well Ciara simply had to keep reminding Ellianith that she just
couldn't fly with her, many, many times during the falls she missed.
Once her scoring was healed, she had to wait for the healers to say she
was ready to fly again, I think that was the hardest part."
R'harne nodded again. "How's the Wingsecond thing going," he asked with
a grin for the former Weyrleader. There were many things that he liked
about Guieth being brown, and not the least of them was that it kept him
clear of the bizarre game of chance that was the Weyrleadership.
"I'll admit it's a lot less work than having the Weyrleadership. I can
see a lot more of my daughter while she's stil small. Not something I
really liked missing out on."
"Perhaps they should limit Weyrleader flights to bronzeriders without
families - or those that don't care that much about them."
"Try explaining that to a dragon all ready to fly," joked K'sedel.
R'harne smiled. "Always worth a try. Oh well, the mating flight
dictated change in Weyrleadership serves one purpose ..."
"Which is?"
"Gets us used to having a new leader -" he snapped his fingers "- just
like that. Now quite as fast as it might happen in Threadfall, but the
uncertainty is probably good practice."
"Even if it does end up being my son."
"Well, yes, but you already had him working as your Wingsecond. He
would have taken over the Wing had anything happened to you in the air."
"It just makes things, a little more interesting, for me at least."
"And for us. Keeps up all on our toes - and wingtips."
"And then we get to see what happens next time Tabarnith rises." The
gold was known for changing her mind, the fact that she'd picked
Nikornath three times in a row was something of a surprise.
"Ahh, yes. You could be right back where you came from." R'harne shook
his head. "Funny business, really."
"I know, dragons, who'd argue with their logic."
"Not I, Wingsecond. Not I."
