K'reyel

K'reyel

The day had been hot. And with the humidity it felt almost too hot, and that
made people snappy, even caused some arguments.

And arguments were happening when K'reyel came to find his daughters.

"Mine!" shouted Kerrana. "That's my book and you know it Reyela. give it
back!"

"But I was reading that, brat."

"It's my book!"

"Give me that," K'reyel's voice was calm as he studied the girls. Kerrana
was glaring at her sister as the older girl got to her feet and handed over
the book. "You should know better than this Reyela, you are older than
Kerrana and should be setting her an example."

"Da..." the book was handed over, albeit reluctantly. Reyela was not looking
her father in the eye, clearly anticipating a dressing down of some sort,
and she began to chew on her lip a little.

"This book should be way too easy for you," began her father. "Kerrana has
only just learnt to read and and she needs to practice, you on the other
hand have a few of your own, and if you want something else to read know you
can go and ask the Harpers for advice and see if they will lend you
something."

"Yes Da."

"Look at me Reyela," reluctantly the girl lifted her head.

"I know you were upset not to impress last month, and I do know how that
feels. Believe me I do. It took several goes before Erdenth found me on the
sands. If there is a dragon for you, she hasn't been clutched yet. And the
chances are good. You're the child, grandchild and great-grandchild of
riders."

"But that doesn't mean that you can behave like a brat closer to Mayel's
age. Nor does it mean that you can take it out on your sister. Kerrana is
younger than you, you have to remember that and still not old enough to
understand about having to share," continued K'reyel. "Do you understand
that?"

"But Da..." began Reyela.

"No buts, I'm going to give this to your sister, is that understood?"

"Yes Da." Reyela pouted a little, but watched as the book was handed over to
her younger sister.

"Now, I want the pair of you to behave for the next candlemark, and then
we'll go get some dinner with Mai and Mayel. Think you two can manage
that?"

"Yes Da," came some more enthusiastic replies.

"Good. Then we'll say no more about this."
