Ciara

Ciara

"Is it better or worse," Teykara said as she settled herself beside the other greenrider at the crowded dinner table, "Now that you man's not Weyrleader?"

"Hm?" Ciara looked up from her plate and smiled at Teykara as she sat down. "Hello, Tey. Hard to say. I think he's still getting over the shock."

"As interesting as that is, I was asking about how it was for _you_,"
the younger greenrider said with a grin. "You know, bronzerider and their egos ... not _really_ that fascinating."

"It's fine for me." Ciara admitted. She supposed it was nice being known as the weyrleader's weyrmate, but it wasn't something she needed to be. She just needed to be K'sedel's weyrmate, whether he was weyrleader or not. "I'm wondering now if he'll be able to relax a little bit more with that off of his shoulders. He's worried about Mai and her baby..." Of course, K'sedel would still have other duties, but not those of weyrleader.

"That's his grand-baby, isn't it? How's he doing?"

"Actually, pretty well." Ciara admitted with a smile as she remembered the tiny hands and feet and the scrunched up face. "He's eating well.
I'm hoping they can be released from the infirmary soon - he was rather premature."

"How little?" Teykara asked, indicating a length between her knife and fork and varying it for Ciara to suggest a stopping point.

"Oh he's tiny, just tiny, but so beautiful." Ciara held out her hands apart instead at about what she thought the size of the baby was.

"That's _small_." Teykara shook her head in amazement. "I'm glad I'm not having them. That'd scare me half to death."

"Babies scare you?" Ciara cocked her head to the side. "Or having one so small?"

"Having one so small. But I don't want to have them at all. Not now,"
she said, then added, "Not in a Pass."

"Why not?" Ciara's face wrinkled up in confusion. "I mean, life must go on, and children as such treasures, they really are."

Teykara shook her head. "I don't want to get into that conflicted loyalty thing. My dragon and Pern; the children. No, it's all or nothing for me. If the Pass hadn't come along, then I could have done it. Expected to, really. But then they said Thread was coming, and it was too late."

"I see." Teykara had a point. Ciara had to admit that things would have been different had thread not started to fall. Yet, she didn't regret having Radela. She loved her daughter and spent as much time with her as she could. "So tell me what you have you been up to, Tey."

"Keeping an eye on my younger sister. She Impressed, last Hatching.
The one before that Impressed died in a 'Fall. Probably needlessly."
Teykara frowned. "So I'm seeing if there's anything I can do to make sure this one learns everything she can."

"I'm sorry." Ciara said softly, looking down at her plate. She knew what it was like to lose friends, but she had never lost a family member - she hoped she never would. After a couple of bites, she looked back up. "I know she will be a fine dragonrider," The greenrider stated with a smile, "Especially with a sister like you to teach her."

The other greenrider laughed. "Oh, I don't know that I'm that good.
Alive, though, so that's some small recommendation these days."

"Yes." Ciara nodded slowly. "I'm sure she'll do well and be fine.
After all, look at who will be looking after her."

"The Weyrlingstaff?" Teykara chuckled. "Or us, when she arrives in a fighting wing?"

"No, I mean you." Ciara smiled and leaned forward. "And me too, if you like."

"We'll see. I certainly never got to give the last sister any advice."
Not that Ykana would have taken it. She was scornful of all her other sisters' attitudes and behaviours.

"She'll be fine." Ciara repeated, with a nod. "Just let me know if you would like me to help in any way."

"I will, Cinale. And I appreciate the offer. It's awful to say it but I'd be a lot unhappier to lose this sister than the last."

"Well, let's try not to lose her, then."
