Now that the Threadfall was over, it was time for K'ran to get his score treated. It hadn't been a terrible one, only glancing his right shoulder, but it had continued to sting and blood had soaked into his jacket. He had been waiting in the Infirmary for someone to treat him for some time, but that was understandable; the healers had had to deal with the worst cases before the mild ones.
"Well, bronzerider, I have passed you three times by now at least. Has no one tended to you yet?" a man with a bushy grey mustache asked as he stopped right in front of K'ran.
"It's only a mild score, and I know there were wingmates with worse ones." K'ran explained.
"Ah, but they've all been tended to now. I'd say its your turn, bronzerider..." he waited for the younger man to supply his name.
"K'ran, sir." the bronzerider supplied. He stood up. "Cyclone Wing."
"All right. Right this way, K'ran," the Weyrhealer said, leading him back towards one of the tables set up. He waved to an apprentice to bring the redwort, scissors and bandages. "I don't believe I've seen you in here before."
"We're usually pretty good about avoiding scores. Today was unlucky, I suppose. My shoulder was mildly scored."
"So I see," Pacham nodded. "I can tell you I can save your arm, but your shirt might be too far gone for my skills."
K'ran couldn't help but laugh. "I can find another shirt easier than another arm."
"A very healthy attitude, I must say," the Weyrhealer grinned as he cut away the shirt. "Is this your first scoring?"
"No, my second." It was still a low number. "I forgot how much it stings."
"Well, you're lucky. This one barely stratched the surface. We will have to see about your mobility, but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have to sit out this next Threadfall. Is this your dominant arm?"
"It is." K'ran agreed, glad that he hopefully wouldn't miss Fall.
Dolphin Cove needed all the flying riders they could get.
"Hmm," Pacham hummed thoughtfully as he reached for the redwort. "That might complicate things just a bit. You might lose some mobility in the arm until it heals." And catching firestone sacks midair required a bit of dexterity. "We will have to see how quickly it heals."
Well, at least it wasn't permanent marring, K'ran thought. "How should I take care of it?"
"You'll be given some teas that you will need to drink for the next sevenday. This is certainly not a major Threadscore, but it might take a little time to heal due to the location. Hold still please," Pacham said as he applied a little bit of numbweed to the area. "You have a few persistant pieces of Thread in there."
That was certainly something no rider ever wanted to hear, so K'ran stayed very still. "You mean that since the shoulder's used a lot it gets strained before it can fully heal, right?"
"New skin is very thin and easily damaged. I am not worried about straining so much as re-opening the wound." Pacham poked the injured area with the back of his tweasers. "Can you feel this?"
"No." K'ran said. "What would happen if it reopens? More time healing?"
The Weyrhealer nodded as he started picking flecks of frozen Thread out of the wound. "More time to heal, more chance of infection, painful movements and possible loss of mobility as it heals, larger scar. Not that I suppose you're too concerned about the scar."
"Not particularly. Scars are a fact of life, as a guard or a rider."
"Indeed." The healer rinsed the wound with redwort once more and pat the skin around the wound dry. "All right, that's that. I'll just bandage this up and we can send you on your way."
"Thank you very much, Master."
