K'sedel

K'sedel

Tamah walked towards the Weyrleader's office with long, purposefull strides. His raincloak flapped around his legs. A bronze firelizard appeared, and with proud chirp, landed to the harbour master's shoulder, holding out the message tube for him. "Thank you, Zenit, I hope the wind didn't give you any trouble," Tamah said and took the message from the tube. The flit let out a sound that sounded like derissive snort. Tamah was still reading the message when he entered the Weyrleader's office.

"Come in Tamah," K'sedel gestured for a seat, knowing the Harbour Master would only be a moment before he spoke his piece.

"Thank you, sir," Tamah said and crumbled the message into his pocket. "At least the Monsoon Racer avoided the storm. They have changes their course and should arrave late tomorrow evening."

"Any word on her sister ship?" asked the Weyrleader. Unlike some weyrs, the easiest route to River Bluff was by sea, and a good Harbour Master was a necessity.

"Typhoon Racer? Not yet, but I'm sending Zenit here to the captain as soon as I'm able," Tamah replied and scratched the flit's head. Zenit and his blue brother Leeward had been with him since he was lad and he couldn't imagine a life without them.

"Will there be a safe harbour for them to wait it out in if they can't make it here?"

"Rock Bay seahold has nice, sheltered harbour," Tamah replied. "Much better than ours."

"Might be an idea to direct them there then, if there is going to be more shelter from this weather."

"Any place has more shelter than our little port," Tamah said with roll of his eyes. "Those forfathers who built this place weren't seacrafters, that much is obvious."

"Have the rest of the scheduled shipping been warned to find alternative harbours?" asked K'sedel. They couldn't do with losing the tithes, or the lives of the sailors bringing them.

Tamah nodded. "The problem is Golden Dawn, it's middle of unloading her cargo. She might not be able to rise her achor and set sails before the storm hits us."

"Would some more people help? With the unloading I mean," suggested the Weyrleader.

"That would help, but she still has to ride the storm in our harbour and it's wide _open_ to everything coming from sea," Tamah said. It was a problem he had been grumbling about past six turns and would continue until he retired as a harbour master. It was also something nobody could do anything about.

"I can see if R'syl can let you have a few weyrlings to help unload."

"Or maybe the Headwoman could borrow few sturdy candidates? Meanwhile, where taking into warehouses everything we can and tying up everything we can't. We're also sandbagging the buildings closest to the beach."

"Go and ask her, I'm sure those she hasn't found work for can be detailed to help you."

Tamah nodded. His browns furrowed when he tried to remember if there was anything else he need to cover with the Weyrleader.

"Is there anything else we need to know?"

"I don't think so. I let you know if something comes up," Tamah replied.

"I'd appreciate it," said the Weyrleader.

"Now, if you excuse me, I go and see if I can find a spot in the harbour where Golden Dawn could ride the storm in anchorage, without being hit directly by the wings."

"Let us know once she's safe."

"I'll send either Zenit or Leeward with a message," the harbour master promised.

"Good."
