Description: D'cal learns some things about Dyaera's past while they ride out the storm.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 19 of Turn 4
A flash of lightning briefly illuminated Dyaera's weyr, and she buried
her face against D'cal's chest and covered her ears. "I _hate_ this
part!" she moaned for the fourth or fifth time, her entire body tensing
against the coming thunder.
"It can't get you in here," he assured her for the fourth or fifth time.
"Do you want to go somewhere deeper into the Weyr?" Somewhere the wind
and thunder wasn't quite so loud.
Dyaera shook her head and glanced toward Tilarth's weyr, where the green
dragon was visible. She'd crowded as far into the main section of the
weyr as she could go. Where once Aosorath had been tiny compared to her,
now the blue was large enough to block much of the entrance on the other
side of Tilarth. "I don't want to leave them."
"All right." He knew they'd be fine. Dragons were hardy beasts. But
he could certainly understand her need to be close to her lifemate then.
"Are you thirsty? Maybe we can open a bottle of wine." And it might
calm her a bit as well.
She gave him a dubious look. "Don't you remember what happened last time
I had wine? I tried to get you to sleep with me and B'vin at the same
time."
"Yes, and you certainly didn't succeed and I doubt your chances have
improved." D'cal was more than a little certain B'vin would object with
the idea even if he agreed to it. And for him to agree to it he'd have
to be more than a little drunk. "It's just you and me here now."
"That's true." It made her smile a little. "I guess the worst I can do
is try to seduce you."
"Hmmm," he smiled knowingly. "I might even let you succeed."
Dyaera's laughter was cut off by a yelp as another flash of light was
followed almost immediately by a rumble of thunder so loud it seemed to
make the air vibrate.
When the echo died away he carefully unwrapped her arms from around
before he passed out from lack of oxygen. "Where's the wine?"
"Uhhm..." Dyaera turned and peered over the back of her couch. "I
think over there, under my riding jacket."
D'cal carefully reset the jacket on its peg. Having lived in the
cramped quarters of a ship as an apprentice he had picked up the habit
of putting everything in its place. He brought the wine and a couple
glasses back to the sofa and worked on opening the bottle. "So what
bothers you so much about storms, anyway?"
Dyaera snuggled back into his side quickly, her fingers tightening
almost painfully on his leg as thunder crashed again. "A hurricane hit
the coast where we lived when I was six. My mother died in the
flooding."
"I'm sorry. I didn't know." D'cal kissed the top of her head softly.
He had never heard her speak of her family before. "Were you with her?"
"I--don't remember it very well. Just cold and wet and the thunder..."
She shuddered. "My aunt's husband died, too. And my cousin and my
grandparents. It was mostly just me and my father and his sister after
that."
"Shards, Dyaera, that's aweful." And there were no dragons to rescue
them like there had been at Topaz Sea Hold. How many of his relatives
would have died if the dragonriders had not come to save them? "I can't
even imagine."
"Like I said, I don't really remember it that well. I was too young." It
was a lie, but talking about it was not doing anything for her nerves,
and she could feel Tilarth's worry already.
D'cal could feel the tension returning to her body. "Do you want to
talk about it?"
Dyaera shook her head. "No. I want wine." **Lots of it.**
He handed her a glass, thinking that was the best idea, for both of
them. "Just don't drink too fast. I don't want you regretting it in
the morning."
She took a cautious sip of the wine, unsure if she'd like it. Someone
had left it in her weyr months ago and she'd never bothered to open it.
"I don't care as long as I'm here to regret it."
"Hey now," D'cal said firmly. "Nothing is going to get you here.
You'll be perfectly safe here with me."
After taking another sip of the wine, she put it aside. "I don't want to
wait until I'm drunk to seduce you," she said bluntly. "I want to go
curl up in bed and hide under the covers and pretend there isn't a
hurricane trying to destroy the Weyr."
"You don't have to seduce me. We can just curl up on the bed and wait
the storm out." Not that he would mind riding out the storm in such a
pleasant way.
Dyaera frowned. "You don't want me to?"
The bluerider grinned. "Oh, I want you to. I just don't want you to
feel you _have_ to."
Thunder crashed again causing Dyaera to jump almost off the couch with
nerves. "Can we do it _now_ then?" she demanded in a voice that held the
slightest edge of panic. "If you don't distract me soon, I'm going to
faint from terror."
"Come on," he said, rising to his feet and reaching down a hand to help
her up. "Soon you won't even notice the storm outside." But just in
case, he grabbed the wine.
