Ylisahn bent down to roll up the cuffs of the borrowed trousers yet
again, thinking that it might have been time effective to seek out
somebody who had clothes on this level that actually fitted her, rather
than just having borrowed from the first person to offer. She couldn't
help but wince at the thought of the Weyr's laundry under water; under
sand and water. How would she get the clothes cleaned and returned to
the bluerider who had donated them? And beyond the laundry -

No, she didn't want to think about her own rooms that she hadn't had
time to get back to.

She straightened and padded in still-damp sandals to the weyrs that had
been appropriated by the healers. When her assistant had first
mentioned it Ylisahn had been too busy to check for herself, but now it
was a different sort of work. She had set people to sorting and
inventorying the stores that had been brought upstairs, others recording
names and locations. It was time she checked on something she couldn't
do anything about. The injured. She couldn't help but remember how
close she had come to being one of those herself.

At the open door to the rider quarters she knocked and edged into the
room. People were busy and for a moment she just watched, not wanting
to disturb them unless they had time to spare.

After a moment, Dantial caught sight of her and waved her over to where
he was sitting in the corner, scribbling notes hastily. When she reached
him, he glanced up and frowned at her tired, disheveled appearance. "Are
you all right, Ylisahn?"

"Me? Oh, yes. I came to see if there was anything you needed ... That
we might be able to supply." There was so much they couldn't supply any
more. "And - Will you tell me who's injured?" It occurred to her that
Wingleaders did this at the end of Threadfall. Came and checked up on
the people that were their responsibility, knowing that the news wasn't
always going to be good.

The healer stood up and slid a gentle arm around Ylisahn's shoulders to
lead her to a chair. "Sit down for a moment, and I'll find you the list.
You look like you could use a few moments off your feet, and I would
like to see you get it."

"I sat down before," Ylisahn insisted as she settled herself into the
chair. But that had been on the stairs, and she had been crying at the
time, so perhaps it didn't count. And that reminded her: "There's at
least one body down in the dining cavern or further back."

"I'll make a note of it," Dantial promised. He caught the arm of a
passing apprentice quickly. "Go find something warm for the Headwoman to
drink... there was klah and tea on the hearth... whichever is ready now."

"I don't think we bought much fuel for fires up here," the Headwoman
said suddenly, hearing something of the journeyman's instructions. "I
had lists, but they all got wet when I did. I have people making new
inventories. So that's all right."

"It's all right. The apprentices had to fetch more fuel already. We had
to keep the fire going, and putting a kettle to the side to brew hot
water is just good sense." Especially since most of the healers were
going to need restorative drinks before the evening was over.

"But the kitchens. We do a lot with electricity. Not that we don't
know how ... Not to worry. I'll sort something out if the kitchen
staff haven't already." She was fairly sure she knew where they had
ended up. There was a nice central suite of rooms with a weyr across
from them. She thought that's where the kitchen supervisor had said she
was going.

"It's all right," Dantial said again, starting to feel a little
concerned. "Take a breath, Ylisahn. We can't make it through this
without you, but you _must_ take care of yourself. Please, just relax
for a few moments."

"I can't stop thinking," she admitted. "But that's a good thing, right
now. And I will have a rest soon. I promise. Now, were you going to
tell me about the injuries while I have a drink? You probably need to
sit down yourself, you know."

The apprentice returned with a mug of klah that was still mostly warm,
and Dantial pressed it into Ylisahn's hands before sitting next to her.
"There. We're both sitting down. You drink your klah and I'll see what
I've got on my list."

"Oh, this is good!" Ylisahn said, gulping at the warm liquid. "You go
ahead. I'll rest and listen," she promised.

After watching the Headwoman for a moment, Dantial sighed and picked up
the list he'd been working on, his voice growing softer as he read
slowly down the list of injuries and causalities. Not as many of the
latter as the former, yet, but both of them knew the list would grow
once the storm was over and they had to try to account for those who
were missing.

"That's not as bad as it could have been, I suppose," Ylisahn said
thoughtfully when the healer stopped speaking. "I keep thinking - what
if the storm surge had come ashore in the middle of the night and there
had been no Dolphin Hall to pass on the warning?" Many of the lower
caverns corridors and rooms were dead ends, just driven as far into the
rock as they could be to connect up natural chambers, and rooms on the
ground level were prized by parents with young children. She put her
cup down and got to her feet. "Most of us have survived, and we saved a
lot of things we'll need over the next few sevendays." It felt good to
gather positives together. Energising.

Knowing it would be futile to try to get her to stay much longer,
Dantial stood as well. "Just take care of yourself over the next few
candlemarks, Ylisahn. You'll need to rest for longer than just a few
moments at some point."

"I will," the Headwoman promised. "I have a family who will catch up
with me soon and see to that."
