"Do you want to tell me what happened then?" asked the Weyrleader of the goldrider sat across from him. It bothered him a little as to why Vilarth had felt the need to call for Nikornath, why she hadn't just had here gold pass on the order to M'galec's bronze...
Lenala tried not to twist her hands together in nervousness as she met K'sedel's eyes. "I was trying to get M'galec to leave, but he wasn't willing to go. He can be... very intimidating sometimes. And Vilarth was just worried about me."
"I appreciate that," replied the Weyrleader, his tone understanding. "But there is something that I don't understand, that I hope you can help me with."
She couldn't help herself. Her fingers tightened around each other so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Yes?"
For a moment he paused, wondering how best to phrase this. "Lenala, you ride a gold dragon. Yesterday proved that she is capable of using her authority when she called for me. I just want to know why you didn't use that to communicate your desire for M'galec to leave to his dragon?"
Her cheeks turned slightly pink. "I... I didn't ask Vilarth to talk to anyone. She told his dragon to make him leave last time, but it didn't seem to work. M'galec doesn't always seem to listen to anyone. Even his dragon."
"If you had asked Vilarth to make it an order, do you think he'd have ignored that?" he asked gently.
She hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Maybe. But--I'm ashamed to say it, K'sedel, but Vilarth didn't want to listen to me. And maybe she was right, because--" She swallowed and looked back down at her hands. "I would have let him stay. I was scared."
This perhaps was more than the Weyrleader had expected to handle. Normally he'd have left it to his Weyrwoman, but the fact that his bronze had become involved, involved him too. He could tell her that she shouldn't have let it get to that state, but that was almost certainly something she knew -
now. "You do realise that scared or not, as a goldrider you can still take control whatever?" he said in the end.
"That's what Tsaera told me," she said after a moment. "I'd like to believe it. But I've never been very good at taking control."
"You can learn though. Tsaera will help you, if you and Vilarth will let her."
Lenala nodded and finally looked up to meet his eyes. "I don't know what to do if M'galec corners me again. What if he won't listen to my dragon?"
"If he really won't listen to you or Vilarth after you've tried your hardest, then you can have her call for Nikornath, or Tabarnith. But only if you must." Hopefully that statement would encourage her to try herself.
"All right." It would be a comfort just knowing she could. Maybe with that comfort, she could resist the urge to actually do so. "I'm sorry I caused so much trouble, K'sedel."
"It probably would have caused more problems in the long run had you not had myself involved."
She could only imagine what might have happened if Ar'lis had gotten there before K'sedel. "Even so, I'll try not to let it get to that point again. I promise."
"And I accept what you say, and believe it." Telling her that someone believed in her seemed appropriate.
Impulsively, Lenala closed the distance between them and hugged K'sedel. Not a sultry or suggestive or seductive hug, but simple gratitude that he was not like some of the Weyrleader's she'd dealt with in the past. K'sedel would help her and guide her, and he wouldn't even ask for anything in return.
Maybe River Bluff was going to be the place where she could finally feel at home.
