K'sedel

K'sedel

Sometimes he spoke to riders officially to compliment them, sometimes it was the much less pleasant task of reprimanding them. And then other times like this one it was purely social. After all, it wasn't just drilling and flying fall together that made a wing into a cohesive unit, there had to be that ability to get on, call it friendships between wingmates that helped oil the gears of their formations.

With that in mind, he waved to the brownrider as he entered the wing meeting room. The meeting itself wasn't due to start for a few moments, but there was always time to say hello to people.

"How've you been R'harne?"

"Fine, sir," the brownrider said with a nod. "And you?"

"Good. Getting a bit more sleep now that the baby is sleeping through."
A smile crossed his face at the thought of his tiny new daughter.
"She'll go to a foster mother soon enough."

"Never had anything to do with either of mine," R'harne admitted. "Will you miss her?"

"Surprisingly enough, I will. I won't miss the broken nights, but it'll make the time we do get together more precious." Some riders seemed to hand over their children as soon as they could to be fostered and that would be it. Not K'sedel. He'd always played as much of an active part as he could with them, not that it was easy to do that though.

"Time together in a Pass," the brownrider said. "Always going to be precious."

"Especially with at least forty more turns to go."

"If it follows the old pattern." R'harne grinned. "I don't know that I'll see the end of it, so there's no point in worrying about that."

"No, that will be something our children will have to deal with."

"Your daughter," he suggested. "My sons."

"And my elder children too."

"The grown ups? Like the Wingsecond?" R'harne thought they were close to him in age than to his children - and certainly closer to the Weyrleader in age than they were to their new half-sister.

"It's possible."

R'harne thought the riders amongst them would have to be lucky - very lucky - to survive forty Turns of fighting Thread but recognised that that might not be the thing to say to any father. "How's your weyrmate?
Will she mind fostering your daughter?"

"She knows she has to, but it doesn't mean she likes the idea. I don't think any woman, weyrbred or not likes giving up their little ones."

"Some don't want to have them if that's the result. Teykara doesn't want to."

"She's still young. She has time to change her mind, unless nature does that for her."

"I don't think she will. It's the Pass. More important things for dragonriders to do, in her opinion."

"We'll see," said the Weyrleader as the last of the riders filed into the room.

People often doubted Teykara's opinion on having children, but R'harne would bet marks that her mind was made up. Unless she or Yeulanth sufferred an injury severe enough for them to be grounded for a Turn, he doubted there would ever be any babies for his weyrmate. "Indeed we will."
