"Sir?" Being asked to see the Wingsecond wasn't ever likely to be a good thing in Jh'slaen's life. Not lately, anyway. He hovered at the office door after his knock and greeting, hoping that the bronzerider was out.
"Come in!"
Jh'slaen all but leapt in the door. "You wanted to see me, sir?" It had better be about his and Saradath's flying or he was in for an roasting.
"Take a seat greenrider."
That sounded bad and Jh'slaen eased himself into the chair opposite the desk with a wariness that had nothing to do with the chair and everything to do with the Wingsecond.
"What do you have to say for yourself this time?" began K'reyel. He knew that rumours had again been circulating, and given that the youngster had been the source of them last time....
"I had nothing to do with it." That seemed safe enough - and true.
"Nothing to do with what?"
Hmm. Now he was going to have to air the subject and hope he was talking about the right thing. "The wingthird mentioned she had heard something attributed to me that I didn't say. Something about the weyrlingmaster staff."
"Which was?"
"Er - that they were cowards to hide out in weyrling training during a Pass? Something like that. I _really_ didn't say it, or anything that could have been interpreted that way."
"So what exactly was it that you did say?" K'reyel leaned forwards onto his desk, resting his elbow on a book, and his chin on his hand as he continued the questioning.
"Nothing. Not one word about cowards or weyrlingmaster staff. I just don't know where this is coming from."
"And you're sure nothing you said could be misconstrued in any way?"
"Nothing." Jh'slaen added after a pause: "I'm too scared of the weyrlingmaster second to even think thoughts like that."
K'reyel repressed a laugh, and successfully fought a battle to keep his face straight. That bronzerider was an intimidating figure to say the least. "Right," he began. "I'll take your word this time, but don't let me see you here again about something that you may or may not have said."
"But I don't know how to stop people saying I said things," Jh'slaen said, a little panicked by the impossibility of controlling the problem.
"Anybody can say anything and then say they heard it from me."
"You can try telling them to their faces that it wasn't you."
"Somehow I don't think that's going to work with the weyrlingmaster staff."
"You can leave them to me."
"I can?" That sounded as if he didn't believe the wingsecond could do what he said, which seemed like an unwise doubt to air. "Yes, sir. I'm sure I can," he said in a completely different tone.
"I'll have a word with M'galec and ask him to have a general conversation with his staff and the weyrlings about gossip."
Jh'slaen nodded. "Is that all, sir?" He hoped so.
"Yes, you're dismissed greenrider."
