Description: Everlyin arrives at River Bluff, and the reunion goes better than Felarin had anticipated
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 1, day 11 of Turn 4
Usually Everlyin arrived at River Bluff Weyr on the back of a gold dragon, her mother firmly belted into the saddle in front of her.
This time, she was flown in on the back of a green dragon, and both Tsaera and Felarin could see from the pinched expression on her face that the differences in the young green dragon's flight and Tabanirth's smooth wingstrokes had not agreed with her. "Oh shells," Felarin whispered to Tsaera as they stood waiting for Everlyin to dismount, "I don't think I can do this!"
"Don't be ridiculous," Tsaera whispered back. "She's your mother."
"That's what I'm afraid of..." The Candidate swallowed nervously and plastered what he hoped was a brave smile on his face. Tsaera reached out and took his hand. His palm was clammy against hers.
Everlyin stepped lightly from the green's elbow to the ground. She drew off her borrowed riding helmet and ran a hand through her messy brown hair, then approached Tsaera and Felarin where they waited on Tabanirth's ledge. "Mother?"
"Everlyin." Tsaera dropped Felarin's hand to embrace her daughter.
"It's so good to see you! Shards, but you look so thin!"
"It's good to see you too, mother," Everlyin said, allowing herself a moment to relax in Tsaera's arm. She rested her cheek against the Weyrwoman's shoulder and for a moment the ridged line of her back softened and became more human. Then she sighed, and the moment was broken. "Even though I wish I wasn't here at all."
"I know." Tsaera kissed her on the cheek and tried not to let her own worry show - unlike Everlyin, she knew _exactly_ what to expect for Felarin if he Impressed, and it didn't help her worry less. The ground was safer... "But we're glad to see you anyway."
Everlyin stepped away from Tsaera and turned to her son. She stood impassively taking him in, from the scuffs on his light boots, to the uneven hem of his pants, the patch on his elbow, and the shaggy dark brown hair. "You need a haircut."
Felarin glanced up sheepishly. "Yeah, I guess I do."
His mother smiled, then stepped forward to embrace him. He smiled in relief over her shoulder at Tsaera, who winked at him and mouthed, 'see?'. After a moment, Everlyin pulled away. "I've missed you so much!"
"I've missed you too, Ma."
"Well? Shall we go in? I could use a glass of water after that trip /between/ and you two can tell me all about how the Weyr is doing, and what you're planning for Felarin's birthday!" Everlyin slipped a hand around Felarin's back and gestured to her own mother to follow.
Tsaera suppressed a small smile - just who was Weyrwoman here?! But she kept her peace and followed her daughter and her grandson into her weyr. They were all talking again, and maybe the rift that Felarin's flight to River Bluff had caused was healing. And that was definitely worth setting aside her pride for.
