More Confusion

Characters: Dyaera, D'cal, Zanie
Description: Dyaera interrupts D'cal and Zanie's time together with a somewhat awkward apology.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 30 of Turn 3

D'cal drew lazy circles with his fingertips around Zanie's shoulder. He could tell she wasn't asleep, though how either of them could still be awake was beyond him. Every once in a while he would feel just the smallest twinge of guilt for spending these moments with her instead of Dyaera. But why shouldn't he? Dyaera hadn't bothered to stick around. She obviously had other plans. Fine. Let her have her fling. D'cal could be happy lying here with Zanie. After all, she wasn't just some random lover. There had been a time when she had almost rivaled Dyaera, after all.

Zanie's eyes were closed, but she shifted sleepily against him and made a pleased noise. "That feels nice," she mumbled, turning to nestle her cheek against his shoulder.

He leaned his head down to kiss her forehead softly. "I'm glad you came to me. Last night was amazing."

"That's putting it mildly." She didn't know what had come over them last night, but the aching pain that had driven her to seek out D'cal was gone. "I think I learned a few things my father would murder you for teaching me, though."

"Considering he'd probably murder me for just kissing you that's not saying much." But he knew what she meant. The whole experience had been utterly different from anything he and Dyaera had ever done. It wasn't her fault, being limited in her mobility. Faranth's name, the things you could do with a little flexibility and a little imagination!
"You know... it doesn't have to be over yet..."

Zanie laughed and finally opened her eyes, lifting her head to rest her chin on D'cal's chest so she could look at him more easily. "You have some more interesting ideas?"

"I'm sure I can come up with a few," he smiled, reaching out to lightly caress her cheek. "Unless you have an idea you'd like to try..."

That brought a charming blush to Zanie's cheeks. "I think I'll let you be in charge of the ideas." It seemed foolish that she could still be embarrassed after the previous evening, but the thought of suggesting ideas to D'cal was more than she could handle.

"Anything you say," the bluerider murmured as he rolled her over. He placed a hand on either side of her, leaning up to look down on her. D'cal just couldn't resist the temptation to stare. He wanted to memorize her face, burn it into his mind. It had been too long since they had allowed themselves to see each other in this kind of light. "Shards, I had almost forgotten how beautiful you are."

"Oh, D'cal..." She smiled and reached up to touch his cheek. "You make me feel beautiful."

He grinned and leaned down to kiss her softly. There was no rush. They had the whole day if they wanted. The night before had been intense and passionate. It was time for a change in pace. And maybe, through careful concentration and creative methodology he could forget Dyaera and her brownrider and think only of Zanie.

"Oh." A familiar voice from the door shattered any hope of putting Dyaera from his mind. "I'm sorry... I didn't know you--I should have asked Tilarth."

"Dyaera," D'cal gasped as he rolled off of her, landing on the floor and taking all the sheets and blankets with him, leaving a very surprised Zanie naked and exposed on the bed. "Oh shards... I was... just..." He pulled the sheet around him, almost as if he could disguise the fact that he was just as naked and aroused as the girl on his bed.

Zanie scrambled for a pillow, clutching it against her body as she blushed violently. "Hello, Dyaera. It's nice to see you again." Dyaera's eyes went from D'cal to Zanie. "You're Zanie, aren't you? The dolphineer girl?" Dyaera could remember meeting her once when she'd still been in the infirmary. At the time, she'd taken it as a good sign that D'cal had finally tried to see other people. Now she wasn't quite so sure how she felt.

D'cal picked up one of the blankets from around his ankles and handed it to girl clutching the pillow. "Dyaera, I didn't know you would be coming down..." Shards, what could he _say_?!

The greenrider cleared her throat. "I--uhh, I came to apologize. About last night. I waited until it was time for the midday meal..." She'd assumed anyone D'cal might have gone home with would have at least cleared out by then! Zanie wrapped the blanket around herself and slid from the bed. "Maybe I should wait in the other room?" she offered, looking between the two nervously.

D'cal hadn't realized it was so _late_! Then again, he hadn't really been that concerned about food... "No, wait, Zanie, you go ahead and...
sleep... Dyaera and I can go out."

Dyaera didn't give Zanie a chance to protest again. She turned and walked out of the bedchamber without another word, leaving Zanie to sit back down on the edge of the bed and stare at D'cal forlornly. "I'm so sorry, D'cal. I didn't mean to cause problems."

"These problems aren't you," he assured her as he grabbed his trousers off the floor. The bluerider adjusted the blanket wrapped around her, leaning down to kiss her forehead apologetically. "I'm glad you came to me, Zanie. Truly."

By the time he moved into the other room, Dyaera had made it to the door and looked as if she was considering trying to escape before D'cal caught her. She started almost guiltily when she saw him, and turned slowly away from the door. "I can come back later. You're... busy."

"Are you angry at me?" D'cal wasn't sure which answer he wanted her to say. Either way, it would probably be telling of their relationship. Dyaera hesitated. "Angry about what?"

"About... Zanie..."

"Oh." Dyaera glanced back at the room, not even sure how she felt.
"Well, it's probably my fault for leaving you last night. So I guess if I'm mad, it'll have to be at myself." "I was on my way to the drink table and my friend grabbed me for a dance to save her from a guy and when it was finished you were... gone." He shouldn't have to explain himself. She left, Zanie wanted him. It could have been left at that. But he just didn't want to damage whatever was left of what they had. "I wanted to spend last night with you, Dyaera."

"But I left." She forced a smile and shook her head. "It's okay, D'cal.
You had every right to find someone else to spend the evening with."
Spending the _morning_ with her too was a bit excessive, but Dyaera could hardly say _that_ out loud. "When she's gone... well, you know where to find me. But you shouldn't leave her in there by herself."

"No, I suppose not." Shards, what was he going to do with Zanie? He wasn't sure what he wanted anymore. Things were starting to get confusing again... "Yeah, I better go."

"I'll talk to you later, then." Dyaera didn't wait for an answer. She turned around and fled as quickly as she could, feeling more confused than she ever had before in her life.
