Breaking the rules (part 2): Facing the consequences

Writers: Emma, Paula
Date Posted: 28th July 2006

Characters: M'van, Kustaava
Description: M'van checks Mindath's injuries after Ava's ill-advised flight with her.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 9 of Turn 3

Mindath was still whimpering when the dragonhealer started his inspection.
Ava stood by, wrunging her hands. She still hadn't stopped crying. She was blaiming herself, causing pain to her beloved dragon.

"Easy now Mindath, we'll get you something for the pain in a moment or two," said M'van soothingly as he checked her left wing. "Can you ask her where the pain is worst?"

Ava's eyes glaced over when she comminicated with her lifemate. "At the shoulder joints. The ankle's pain is easing up," she reported and wiped her nose to the sleeve.

"Both ankles?" he asked as he completed his examination of the wings. "Does one hurt more than the other?"

"No, just one, the left one. I think. Left and right aren't always so clear to Mindy," Ava replied.

"Ask her if she minds me checking."

Ava did so and relayed her answer: "You're welcome, she says, especially if you can make the pain go away." Somehow Mindy's answer reminded her how very young the dragon still was and she felt even more remorseful.

Bending to reach the ankle joint M'van could see already that it was swollen. The young green pulled back slightly, even as he tried to be gentle. "I know that hurts," he murmured. "We'll get you some numbweed in a moment."

Ava winced at Mindath's pain. It felt like her own.

Eventually M'van straightened up. "I think you've been lucky here," he said. "This is nowhere near as bad as it could have been. But this is still serious, I want you to understand that."

"Yes, sir," Ava said obediently. This lesson she had learned. There were reasons for rules and a good reason why first pair-flights were always supervised.

"She's sprained both her shoulders at the wing, and her left ankle is swollen and sore. That seems to be just twisted though It hurts her a lot, as you can see, and we can do something about that. But the main thing is that it will take time for this to heal. At least ten days, maybe two sevendays. No flying before then, for either of you.".

Ava's head hung. It meant she was back to feeding Mindath. Well, at least the dragonet wasn't permanently damaged.

"Like I said, you two have been very lucky, I cannot stress that enough." "Yes, sir," Ava said subduedly.

"I want you to to get her checked by me or one of my colleagues every other day. There will be no flying until we say so. You can butcher food for her, and you'll need to make sure she eats."

Ava nodded. There really wasn't anything she could said.

"Is all of that understood?"

"Yes it is: Check with dragonhealers every other day. Mindath's not allowed to fly and I have to feed her," She listed out.

"Good, now we'll get her back to the barracks, and then no doubt J'an will want to speak to you."

"Yes, sir," Ava sounded like the world was falling around her ears.

"She will be okay, but it'll take time for her to heal."
