Description: Aydhara imparts some weyrling life lessons to P'yanka.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 1, day 10 of Turn 13
If Aydhara thought candidate lessons before each hatching had been boring, it was nothing compared to the grind of weyrling training. She already knew enough about wing drills and dragon care (she did not). She was _bored_.
That boredom brought her into the weyrling training yard where the dragonets had been left to safely explore while their riders were in their stupid boring classes, and she immediately spotted Rath dozing in the yard. She ducked between fenceposts and jogged over to him. **Ssh, ssh.** She said as he started to rouse. **Don't get up.**
}: What are you- hey! :{ Rath complained lightly as Aydhara kicked a leg over his back and flopped, stomach-first, along his back and neck. He was big enough now that he hardly felt her weight on him, though her boots made his hide ticklish as she struggled to balance.
"I'm _bored_." She exclaimed dramatically. "Get bigger. I want to fly." She squeezed him, then idly started scratching his favorite spot on his shoulder.
}: I'm trying! :{ Rath exclaimed, then melted into the scratches. }: Yes, scratchies. I guess you can stay. :{
"Yeah, I really twisted your wing." Aydhara teased.
Nearby, a small and positively pudgy green snored, all four legs in the air, not a care in the world. The loud rattling sound had no right coming from such a small dragonet and her upside down position had somehow given her a warbling whistle on each inhale.
“What’s wrong with her?” P’yanka's voice cracked with a hint of panic as he finally caught sight of Pumoth from behind the bulk of other dragonets. He glanced at Aydhara and her clearly right side up dragonet and back to Pumoth.
Aydhara sat straight up on Rath, hands still scratching the now-itchy spots of fat blue hide she could reach. The relief of the touch echoed along her back, which was still weird but not unwelcome. She looked between P'yanka and Pumoth, then said in a deadpan, "Well, you could rush to a dragonhealer and get an official diagnosis, but to my eye it looks like she's just stupid."
P’yanka gaped with astonishment that someone would call Pumoth stupid. How dare she!
She waited a bit, then grinned. "Seriously, though. She's just snoring. You'd feel it if there was something wrong."
“That’s _not_ right,” P’yanka insisted, because his ears declared it wasn’t but the panic was already draining. The sound had changed to a rhythmic chuff-chuff followed by a gravelly rattle that vibrated Pumoth’s entire belly before her snore hit a new octave. Panic returned. Trying to push a thought at the green was like trying to swim through cotton. Dense and muffling everything.
“Pumoth!” P’yanka attempted to wake the dragonet, trying to shake her gently like one would a puppy. “She’s… getting worse!” He threw Aydhara and Rath a helpless glance as if the blue might have some secret authority over his snoring sibling.
Pumoth chose that exact moment to snort, all four legs jerking at once, startling P’yanka backwards. He landed in the dirt with an oomph. She followed up with a violent sneeze, chubby limbs tensing hard before her claws wriggled every which way. One eye opened, whirling with delight to see her chosen boy so close and utterly oblivious to the chaos she just caused.
Aydhara snickered. "See? She's fine. How do you even sleep with that racket in the alcove next to you?"
P’yanka shot her a look that was half offended, half relieved. “Don’t laugh.” He watched Pumoth a moment longer, her legs still absurdly in the air, her mouth slightly open. Expectant. There was none of that cotton-headed feeling. She was bright. Awake. Her mind seemed positively effervescent. He shuffled closer and to reassure himself more than anything, rubbed her belly. “I thought she was dying.”
}: Harder, :{ Pumoth insisted with a wriggle.
"I told you, you'd really feel it if she was dying." Aydhara said, though this time she wasn't hiding her laugh. "Like if she gets thicktail and can't poop-- you're going to feel like you can't either. Just like how I can feel that Rath is totally fine with me on top of him, even if he's looking like I'm ruining his day."
}: You are not. :{
“Thick tail?” P’yanka repeated the word before he looked more critically at Pumoth’s rather hefty tail. She thumped it against the ground, the motion making creases in the pudgy appendage. “I’m not sure it can get any thicker,” P’yanka said dubiously. How was he supposed to know what was normal? “What if I don’t feel it? What if-”
"You. will. feel. it." Aydhara punctuated each word. "Or maybe she won't poop so long she'll burst. Who's to say."
P’yanka hmmphed, still dubious but willing to be convinced by the words of someone who sounded like they knew what they were talking about. With one hand scratching Pumoth’s belly, much to the green’s shameless and still upside-down delight, P’yanka’s gaze drifted back to Rath. The _blue_ Rath. And Aydhara. The very _not_ male Aydhara.
“But you’re a girl...” he blurted, struggling to process these two facts that seemed so contradictory.
Aydhara's eyebrows rose. "You missed that, did you?"
“I..” he stammered, mind stumbling over it. Anyone could Impress a green, that much he’d always known, but a blue? He’d never heard of a girl Impressing one before. Had he? Embarrassment bloomed burning hot across his face. He felt spectacularly foolish. How could he have missed this? Shards. They’ve had chores and class together since the Hatching, and it had taken him _this_ long to question what he’d been looking at.
P’yanka scrunched his face and dragged his fingers through already messy curls, wincing at himself. The days since the Hatching had blurred together and if he was entirely honest, most of his classmates had blurred with them. His entire world had narrowed to the bright, demanding center that was Pumoth.
“I’m…” his voice cracked and he coughed to clear his throat. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.. not notice. I’ve been so wrapped up in Pumoth I think half my brain has turned to green mush.”
"That's ok. There's only three of us at the Weyr. Two of us are your clutchmates though, so I do get to tease you a little." Aydhara said with a grin. "The third one is my girlfriend, so that's another thing you need to get used to."
“Wait... you’re serious...” P’yanka looked at Aydhara incredulously, and groaned. He hadn’t missed just one. But two!. What else had skipped right past him? Come to think of it, if he was entirely honest with himself, a pink dragon could have hatched alongside Pumoth and he would have missed that too. She was his world now.
}: I’m not going anywhere, :{ Pumoth observed, sounding amused. Reassuring warmth slid into his thoughts. A feeling rather than words. It was going to be alright to look away, focus elsewhere too.
“There’s… a lot to get used to, yeah…” P’yanka acknowledged, gesturing vaguely at the Weyr around him.
"That's what I hear." Aydhara agreed dryly. "I'm weyrbred, I don't know any different."
A commanding voice rang out, recalling the weyrlings back to class and P'yanka turned automatically, already half rising-
-and stopped.
Pumoth was asleep. Again. Not dozing, not pretending. Simply asleep. Her pudgy body was sprawled belly down this time, plump limbs splayed, claw tips twitching as if she was chasing something in her dreams.
"How does she even do that?" P'yanka muttered as he stood up and dusted off his pants.
Aydhara slid off from Rath's back and grinned. "Imagine when she's twenty feet long and sprawled out like that." She teased. She gave Rath one more hug and squeezed his snout before she reluctantly stepped away. "Come on, we better get back before S'ros….I dunno, looks sad at my poor decisions."
