Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 13, day 10 of Turn 12

Notes: Who wants to be the Wingsecond with these two? :)
It was said that with a new Weyrleader came new opportunities and no matter what was said about Q’vettan as a leader, the fact that it had opened up this particular opportunity for Br’elt was exactly what he had been quietly hoping for: a chance to lead. Yeah, he and Werreth were young, just past thirty, but they felt ready. Well, as ready as one could be to step into a leadership role. They might not have experience but they wanted to get it, and improve, so Br’elt figured that gave him a step up from some of the other applicants.
He knocked on Wingleader K’lvin’s door, bouncing on his toes eagerly with a hopeful smile on his face, as he waited to be let in.
“Come in,” K’lvin called without looking up. He was still jotting down notes from his last meeting, which had only ended minutes before. “Have a seat, Br’elt,” he said when he did look up. A wingthird was a necessity and usually it was position K’lvin reserved for riders younger than Br’elt, but he was interested to see if the other man felt he would be a good fit for the position all the same.
“Good morning, sir,” Br’elt said as he took the seat. “I…you wanted to talk to me.” It wasn’t a question, but it wasn’t quite a solid statement either.
“I was wanting to know what your future leadership plans were?” The Wingleader said, launching right into the topic. “Have you considered something beyond just being a wingrider?”
The answer was yes. It had been one of the underlying reasons why he had transferred to Barrier Lake with his best friend. But he didn’t want to seem too eager. It wasn’t like he was chasing rank. He wanted the _challenge_, not the perks. He wanted to see if he was any good at it. “I have, sir,” he answered. He thought his tone sounded calm even though he was probably grinning his excitement. “But I know I’m only thirty. Well, thirty-one. Young. I didn’t want to be a young upstart, you know? I’m not like that.”
K’lvin cocked an eyebrow. “Thirty-one? Young? I’d say you’re a little long in the tooth for a wingthird position, but it’s all I have to offer you at the moment. I generally reserve it for bronzeriders who are in their early twenties, as long as they’ve been riding for a few Turns. I was a Wingleader by your age.” The older bronzerider paused. “That doesn’t dissuade you, does it?” He now realized he might have talked Br’elt out of the position.
The brownrider started laughing. “No, actually, uh…that’s kind of unreal. My old Weyr, they were really picky about leadership. There was lots of competition among brownriders because they wanted bronzeriders to have everything first. So I had to work extra and one of the things they told me was holding me back was my age.” Although, now he wondered if that had just been an excuse. It hadn’t felt like it at the time.
Br’elt rubbed the back of his neck thoughtfully. “I want the challenge, sir. That’s what I’m after. I really think Werreth and I can do it, even if we’re green. Oops, wrong color but you get the analogy. But I’m not that ambitious type that wants it because I’m power-hungry or something. I know it’s a lot of work.”
“Well, I’m glad to have you here, Br’elt. And I would be glad to have you as my wingthird.” K’lvin reached into his desk drawer and withdrew the rank knots. “Now, being a wingthird means a lot of hidework and liaisoning between wingriders and me. I do my best to hear everyone out and go by and see them have threadscores and such, but it stretches me thin.”
“I’d be glad to do that,” Br’elt replied honestly. He liked taking care of the riders in the Wing. When Riyanth had gone /between/, that was how he had spent the whole day. It gave him purpose, kept him going. Kept a lot of people going. “You tell me what you want me to take over and how you want it done and I’ll do it.”
K’lvin nudged the knots over to Br’elt. “Good, then congratulations on your promotion. This entitles you to a small office. It’s a glorified closet, but you can get set up there and I’ll bring you some things I need made into copies along with a current list of our injured wingriders.”
Br’elt felt Werreth mentally perk up. }: We get an office?! That means we get to decorate, right?! Can we get an office feline? :{
**Easy, boy, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.**
Br’elt took the knots, closing his fingers around then with a big grin. He was going to do this! He had a shot! “I’ll take it. Any notes I should start with to get familiar?” He was _definitely_ going to talk to other Wingthirds! He was not going to mess this up!
“Just take it a day at a time and ask questions if you get in over your head. We’ll meet each sevenday to check-in, review Threadfall notes, and discuss wingriders.” The veteran Wingleader cracked a small smile. “You’ll do fine, I’m sure of it.”
Those words bolstered Br’elt’s confidence. “Thank you, sir. I look forward to working with you.” He couldn’t wait to tell his friends that he had gotten the position!
