Aydhan

Aydhan

Thiseta let herself into Aydhan’s office after only knocking once, but she carried a bottle of wine in one hand and waggled it enticingly as she sat. “From the Vintner Hall. I want an egg update.”

"You don't have to bribe me, but I appreciate it all the same." Aydhan said with a laugh. She grabbed a glass and shooed Dingus away before he could get into the cabinet and panic. "There's one egg we're keeping an eye on, but the others are all developing as normal. I got Tym to separate it from the others, so as long as it doesn't develop mold it'll be fine to keep until the hatching. Tymborikath probably wouldn't notice if we sent it /between/ early, but might as well keep it as long as we can just in case."

The Weyrwoman made a face. “I’m sorry. It happens, but it’s never nice to have a questionable egg on the sands. But how nice to know early. The candling went well?”

"It happens. Not all of them come out….fully baked, as it were." Aydhan said with a shrug, though she perked up at the thought of candling. "It went well! I sold Rasme on it a lot faster than I thought I would. Not that she's ever been particularly difficult, but it's hard to tell when it's something as precious as dragon eggs. I'm happy to show you the next time we do it! Tymborikath certainly doesn't care about people getting close to the eggs."

Thiseta snorted. “Faranth, I wish Imbeth were as calm.”

}:No you don’t.:{ The gold dragon had clearly been listening in on her rider’s conversation. }:Tymborikath will lose an egg if she is not careful. I have been watching the entrance of the Hatching Caverns for her, to help.:{

**I’m sure she’s grateful,** Thiseta told Imbeth, although privately she wondered if Tymborikath had noticed at all. “And I’d love to see it. Can you really see a tiny dragon all curled up in there?”

"Kind of. The eggshell is too thick and the light isn't powerful enough to see all the way through like we can with avians and tunnelsnakes, but we can see the little blob as it develops into a dragonet, and some ichor vessels around the inside of the shell. We won't be able to use it to determine full size or dragonet color, but hopefully we can use it to get a warning if an egg isn't going to hatch." Aydhan said excitedly, "Younger gold dragons might need help, or maybe some pairs are more prone to clutching bad eggs. We don't know unless we can pinpoint what the
“The dragons usually take the bad eggs /between/ so quickly after the Hatching… will Tymborikath and Avicath let you keep it?”

Aydhan paused, considering. "Tymborikath can get mopey and upset if she notices, but I doubt Avicath would mind if we took it elsewhere instead of /between/. Are you thinking of trying to do an autopsy?"

Thiseta paused. “I don’t… I suppose I am? Not that I know anything about autopsies,” she admitted. “But Teigan has said that autopsies can pinpoint the cause of death so that you can learn how to better treat the next patient. Can you even do an autopsy on an egg?”

"Well, we'd have to break the shell and look at what's inside." Aydhan said. "I suppose if the death is recent enough to hatching we could, otherwise decomposition would have set in. And I suppose we'd need to find dragonhealers that would be willing to do it. Would Rasme and Eyla?"

Thiseta shrugged. “No idea. I could ask.” The idea of breaking open a dragon egg felt wrong somehow, and she was starting to regret her train of thought. “I suppose we should ask N’kevyn too, to see if he’s comfortable with the idea.”

"N'kevyn would be fine with it." Aydhan said with hardly a moment to consider. "I can ask him, if only to cover ourselves. He's usually the one that takes them /between/, even if it's not his clutch."

“Well. My fingers will be crossed that the egg is suitable for an autopsy after the Hatching,” Thiseta said. “Speaking of, are you planning on anything special for the day itself?”

"Not much, unless you'd like me to put in that effort." Aydhan said, "Something light to eat, at least. I'm still not used to the heat, and the last thing I need is roaring fires and heavy food outside of the hatching grounds. Do you have any requests?"

“Just that you’re happy, and that the Hatching goes well. Barrier Lake needs a few more celebrations without any unnecessary drama. Although it would be lovely if you can have a woman Impress a blue dragon. It seems to be happening at the other Weyrs, and I’d hate for us to get left behind!”

Aydhan's smile was wry, "We won't, if Aydhara has anything to do with it."
