Description: Saibra comes to see how I’serin is doing after Chioneth’s flight.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 3 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned: K’valdran, G’nir, K’reyel, R’enh, U’kaiah
Saibra’s first order of business the day after Chioneth’s flight was a trip to the Weyrleader’s office. The door was open when she arrived, as she had anticipated, and already things were being packed up. Most importantly, the person she’d hoped to see was there.
“I’serin,” she said his name as a greeting as she stopped and leaned against the doorframe. They had worked together for the last Turn as friends, and she would miss that and hoped it would continue, even if they weren’t co-leaders anymore.
“Saibra,” he answered, stopping what he was doing so that he could come over to greet her with hands open. Aluneth was an unhappy presence in his mind but I’serin, at least, was glad to see her. “Congratulations on Chioneth’s flight and your new Weyrleader,” he offered pleasantly. “K’valdran, yes?”
“Yes,” she put her hands in his and squeezed them. “It was my pleasure to work with you,” Saibra told I’serin sincerely. “Are you feeling relieved?”
“The pleasure has been mine,” I’serin said with equal sincerity. “As to feeling relieved, I…suppose that is the predominant feeling, though if you ask Aluneth, that is another story.” Humor glimmered in his hazel eyes for a moment before disappearing into sobriety. “There is…concern, though mostly for you. I have come to enjoy our conversations and confidences. I hope that your new Weyrleader…”
There was a pause as he gathered what sentiment he was trying to convey. Theirs had been a professional relationship but Saibra had also been the first person to learn of his sexuality and, most importantly, had not judged him for it. That acceptance earned her something in his life that went beyond just the business of leading a Weyr. “I hope that he treats you and Chioneth well,” he eventually said, “for you deserve it, not just because of your seniority but also because of your heart.”
The Weyrwoman’s eyes glistened suspiciously at the sentiment. “Thank you. I hope we can keep a weekly or maybe biweekly lunch schedule? Or at least some cliff diving?”
“I would greatly miss our lunches if we did not continue,” I’serin admitted. His tone took on a light jest. “As for cliff diving, I do have other spots to introduce to you, so long as Weyrleader K’valdran does not join Chioneth in threatening to eat me for possibly endangering the Weyrwoman.”
Saibra smiled at the comment. “It’ll be interesting to see what sort of personality K’valdran has as Weyrleader.” She began ticking off names on her fingers, “G’nir, K’reyel, R’enh temporarily, and then you. None of the four of you had the same leadership style.”
I’serin let out a huff of wry laughter. He could not help but still feel that R’enh should have won the flight that I’serin did. “Points for uniqueness, I suppose,” he remarked self-depracatingly before shaking himself of the mood with a straightening of his shoulders. “I…had hoped to do better, that is certain. But…this will give me time to contemplate the lessons learned.” He thought about Q’vettan’s words to him about a second tenure and what sort of leadership that he would want to see happen. Stepping aside would be a good opportunity to work on that.
Before Saibra could respond to that, I’serin crossed over to the liquor cabinet. He poured two small drinks -- it was morning after all but this was more about ceremony and less about getting drunk -- and handed her one. “To Chioneth and her clutch,” he suggested as a toast. “To K’valdran and the…success of Dragonsfall.”
“To you and Aluneth and all you brought to Dragonsfall,” she said, lifting her glass in return. As she sipped the drink, her eyes scanned the office. “You’re not taking the map with you,” she asked, looking at the one of the Dragonsfall territory.
“I…debated it,” he answered her honestly. “It was a gift from you and I treasure it. But I feel it will serve the new Weyrleader better. It is very accurate and that sort of information was of great use to me during times of crisis. I felt it would be…petty?” No, petty was not the correct word but I’serin could not find the right word. “I felt I would be doing the Weyr a disservice by taking it with me,” he amended. “You said Master Esiah drafted it?”
It _was_ an excellent map and would be useful to another Weyrleader, Saibra agreed. “Yes, Esiah did the work. He’s stationed at Dolphin Cove but came here until he was finished with it, so there would be no risk of it becoming damaged in transportation.”
I’serin looked up at the map again. “Do you believe he could recreate it readily enough?”
“I don’t know if an artist like Esiah does exact replicas, but I’m sure he could make you something beautiful. He likes visiting Dragonsfall to enjoy the novelty of snow for a bit before returning to the beach. I believe you’d be able to talk him into coming fairly easily.”
Thoughtfully, I’serin added, “And I could bring him on sweeps so that he could update some of the topography.”
“Getting to sketch from a dragon’s back? Be careful, he’ll fall in love with you,” Saibra said with a laugh.
From anyone else, such a comment might have caused him to freeze up. But from Saibra, he heard the teasing tones. His mouth opened and closed before he also chuckled. “Sometimes, I forget what privileges we have as dragonriders. We take for granted seeing Pern from aloft.” He smiled softly. “I should not keep you for much longer today. There is much to transition over.” I’serin himself still had to speak with K’valdran to officially hand over the coveted Weyrleader knots.
