Aydhan

Aydhan

Thiseta found herself trapped in an endless series of congratulatory conversations after the feast was over, so many that she’d memorized the script. It went something like this:

“Congratulations on such a wonderful Hatching!”

“Why thank you, I am so pleased that you could come today. Were you watching anyone in particular on the Sands?”

Then the conversation would either go one of two ways. The first was preferable: “Yes, I had a child/nephew/niece/other blood relation Impress! I’m so proud, but I am also terrified for them.”

The second was less preferable. “Sadly no, but I am glad that nobody was injured or stabbed!”

Thiseta was caught in the second type of conversation and was doing her best not to do some stabbing herself when she locked eyes with a potential ally across the room: Aydhan. She mentally did her best to send ‘oh Faranth help me’ to the other goldrider even as she said to the Holder she was conversing with, “It’s been such a delight, but could you please excuse me? I need to talk with Aydhan,” and made her escape.

Aydhan had been stuck in what would have been a boring conversation if his holder's son hadn't been so handsome. Droning on about something related to the minutiae of cross-breeding varieties of redfruit. Her gaze wandered to get Thiseta's panicked eyes. She laughed as if understanding whatever joke the man was telling, then gently dragged her hand down his arm to rest it on his elbow. "Pardon me, I see the Weyrwoman. Perhaps we can continue later?" She sidestepped him and left without waiting for an answer.

She looped an arm around Thiseta's, pulling her in close like good friends sharing a secret. "Who was that?" She asked.

“Holder Mengon from Ennet Pass Hold. Let me be the first to say that he’s utterly delightful,” Thiseta said dryly. “Want to swap? The view seems better from where you were standing.”

"Only if you promise to put him to good use. Unless he's only passionate for the farmcraft. That would be _truly_ disappointing." Aydhan said with a sigh. "I think I scandalized Mengon the last time he was here. I can do it again."

“What did you say?” Thiseta asked, intrigued.

"Oh, I pointed out my husband and N'kevyn happened to be getting very cozy with a greenrider." Aydhan said lightly, "He panicked like he'd stumbled on some big secret. I bet you can do the same if you introduce him to Teigan. He looks like the sort that assumes the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader are together."

Thiseta snorted. “Oh probably. Now I’ll have to think of something inappropriate for Teigan to do before the end of the evening, just to make sure that Mengon has something to talk about. Can’t send him home disappointed.”

"Talk about his girlfriend. Or even better, his wife."

She laughed at that. “I’ll let him know. And thank you again for the rescue. Where’s your weyrmate this evening?”

"On daughter duty. We usually take turns, though N'kayden has _graciously_ volunteered his services so it's not just us." Aydhan said with a tone that implied the boy had not volunteered so much as _been_ volunteered. "She has a good group of friends here now, at least, and a little girlfriend."

“She does!?” Thiseta covered her squeal with her hand. “Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. I have been thinking about her all evening. I was so hoping that she’d Impress today.”

"Me too." Aydhan said, "She still has plenty of time. I was nearly twenty-two when Tymborikath chose me." She thought of the little green who looked like she _might_ have considered Aydhara and what that could mean, but now was not the time to worry about it. Instead her smile went conspiratorial again, and she continued a little quieter, "I'm trying to be Very Calm about Aydhara and Casmari courting. It's hard, they're so cute."

“I love teenage romances,” Thiseta said with a sigh. “And perhaps your daughter’s dragon will be in Tym’s Clutch. Either this Turn or a future one.”

"I would love that. One of my babies with one of Tym's babies." Aydhan agreed with an echoing sigh. "On the topic of kids, how is Teigan handling his little one Impressing?"

Thiseta hesitated. “He’s… he sees every mark on the Wings when they return from Threadfall. He’s proud, but _knows_.”

"It's hard. It was better during the Interval. All the joy and none of the hardship. I try not to focus too hard on it. I'll just worry myself sick." Aydhan agreed. "Say, Tymborikath seems to be taking her dear sweet time getting ready to rise. What do you think about inviting Saibra and some other goldriders over soon? Dragonfall's new weyrling will be rising soon. We can entertain Saibra and toast Sybana's important milestone. I'm sure Nidre and Cyradis would love to. And I'd love to invite Agyta back. Provided Saibra doesn't have her bronzerider entertaining her, of course."

“Yes, lets!” Thiseta’s eyes lit up. “I’m so happy to be free of the Hatching Caverns. Hopefully we can find a time soon that everyone’s dragon can fly.”

"One day! Even for this, Nidre may need to hitch a ride with Cyradis and Panitath. There's always one goldrider tethered to the Sands." Aydhan said, "I'll have Tymborikath ask Chioneth tomorrow. Now, though, I'm afraid we'll need to listen to five more toasts to your healthy clutch."

Thiseta covered her smile with her hand. “You laugh now, but I am going to make sure that there’s _more_ toasts at Tym’s Hatching.”
