Description: Barrier Lake's new Weyrsecond arrives
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 7, day 1 of Turn 12
Daith appeared over Barrier Lake with a snappy flash of his wings. He warbled a greeting to the watchdragon before tilting to begin a slow, assessing spiral around the Weyr proper, giving his rider a good view of their new home.
}: I like it, :{ Daith decided within thirty seconds.
**You like anything new,** H’stre answered with a knowing grin. **Lucky for you, there’ll be weyrlings soon for you to play with while I help Q’vettan whip this place into shape. Speaking of…**
}: It’s good to see Tzenketh again, :{ Daith remarked fondly as he angled towards the leading bronze. }: I like him too. :{
“Well, you weren’t joking about how nice it is,” H’stre called as he dismounted since Q’vettan was now expecting them. H’stre inhaled deeply, theatrically. “Better air quality here, that’s for sure.”
"It's the crisp mountain air." Q'vettan called back as he appeared on the ledge. "Not as biting cold as Dragonsfall, thank Faranth. I'm glad they decided to build so far south. The tropical heat is worse than the desert heat." He grinned, recognizing that he sounded like an old man. "Come in. The electrical system is brand new. You're going to lose your mind over it."
“Oh?” H’stre asked, looking up at the lights. “Well, I’ll be seared. Look at that fancy thing! It never ceases to amaze me that we were able to get these things to work. Technicians are amazing.” He grinned broadly in appreciation. “Please tell me that my quarters get something like this.”
"Nothing but the finest for you." Q'vettan said dryly, "Though we could say that for every weyr. A testament to what we can do when we have every available resource at our fingertips. A power station so close to the Weyr. Not having to work through or over existing, ancient infrastructure."
“It’s about time, honestly,” H’stre remarked. “Our ancestors had good intentions but progress must be had on some fronts for sure. Stagnation does no good to anyone.” It was something that H’stre took personally -- if he wasn’t learning or pushing himself, he got destructive. He knew it. Which was another one of the reasons why he had accepted this position.
The long-haired bronzerider plopped into a seat. “So, hit me with your plans for this place. Themes, strategy, vision. What are we keeping, what are we cutting?”
"I've already started moving the Wingleadership around." Q'vettan said, "A brownrider Wingleader for Cypress. He's…eclectic, to say the least, but solid enough to be the first. And a bluerider as Wingleader for Cherry Wing-- the retired riders. It's mostly an administrative position anyway, working closely enough with the Queen's Wing when the grounding is temporary. Two out of three of the Weyrlingstaff are greenriders, one is a woman. She's the only one that I know of, though someone may surprise me at the next conclave."
“Shaking things up!” H’stre remarked. “A brownrider for a Wingleader -- I can see that. I hope you picked some strong-willed greenriders because those bronze babies like to test boundaries.” He gave Q’vettan a wink, bringing to mind some possible shenanigans that either of them may or may not have been responsible for in their respective weyrling classes.
Q'vettan made a dismissive motion with his hands. "It's why I'm keeping D'hol in Ash, at least for now. He can push boundaries with me, if there's any to be pushed. And F'lin and Timassa should temper him somewhat. K'ran's sense of duty should prevent him from trying the same thing. Give the man a chance to fly or fall without bronze posturing and preening."
“Speaking of D’hol -- he’s the old Weyrleader, right? -- how’s he taking this change?”
"With stoicism." Q'vettan answered. "I don't expect much. His lover…weyrmate? Mother of his children is still my Wingthird, so if he makes trouble he'd end up making it for her, too. Imagine promoting your lover to be your subordinate."
H’stre’s eyebrows raised in amusement. “Could get messy, that. I certainly wouldn’t want to have to deal with a few of my exes as my subordinates. Well, it’s good that at least he’s accepting of the transition. You remember how B’raje pitched a fit that one time? Set off all the bronzes for a candlemark. I thought I was going to lose my hearing with all of that bellowing. _His_ bellowing, mind you.” H’stre grinned at the shared memory. “So, I should introduce myself to F’lin and Timassa. The other Wingleaders too. Get a weyr from the Headwoman. Unless you want me to sleep on the floor somewhere.”
Q'vettan rolled his eyes good-naturedly at the story. He hadn't been Weyrleader then to deal with the consequences of such nonsense, but as the Weyrharper he had to de-escalate the raving and report to leadership. Messy, wonderful weyr life.
"Like you haven't slept on my floor before." Q'vettan teased dryly, "I'd suggest getting the weyr first and moving your things in before anyone decides to get up to funny business at Igen."
H’stre shot Q’vettan a jaunty two fingered salute as he rose. “On it, boss. See you at the evening meal.”
