Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 7, day 1 of Turn 12
J’nic did his best to avoid the cold rain as he walked to the Weyrleader’s office, after confirming through Raileth that he was there. He disliked feeling uncertain about his future and, now that he had made a decision, it was a relief to feel like himself again. Of course, there were still plenty of unknowns going forward, but at least he knew the role he was going to play.
Knowing the Weyrleader was busy, and that he seemed to appreciate direct communication, his first words left no room for doubt: “I accept the Weyrlingmaster position.”
Q'vettan looked up from his charts, a knowing smile spread across his face. He'd known- hoped- that J'nic would come around. "Congratulations, Weyrlingmaster." He drawled. "Do you have anyone in mind to replace you? Viseya hasn't been in the position long, but I'm sure she'd make a fine second. Better than trying to place someone new, at any rate."
“Yes, I hope Viseya will take the promotion,” J’nic said. It would certainly help him feel more prepared for the next batch of weyrlings. “And I like the idea of a bronze or brownrider as ‘Third. With the specialized training senior weyrlings go through, it’s nice to have someone they already have a relationship with in the room. I don’t have anyone specific in mind, but will start looking. Unless you’ve had any ideas in the past few days?”
"It might be better to condense the training, then. I wonder how R'lor does it. Surely he doesn't pass off all the bronzes and browns to his 'Second." Q'vettan said with a frown. "And it wouldn't be bad for the boys to understand what the Searchriders do, and vice-versa. Perhaps you can find out? I'm sure R'lor would love the company of his peers."
“I’ll take a look at the current curriculum and see what changes would make sense,” Jnic said with a nod. “It does seem silly at this point to not include blue and greenriders in lessons about leadership. And it’s good to have an excuse to check in with R’lor.” He was glad he had some time before the next Hatching. “I have plenty to keep me busy, but is there anything else on your mind you want to share?”
"Exactly that. We have more greens and blues in leadership these days than ever, and I'd rather our weyrlings go into the Fighting Wings as prepared as they can be." Q'vettan said with a nod. "This is the beginning of Barrier Lake's bloodlines. We need them at their best. As for your 'Third, I'd rather someone with experience if you can find it, but I'll support whoever you think fits that position best."
J’nic’s mind was racing with ideas for how to find a new Weyrlingmaster Third. “I can ask R’lor when I go visit him. And, I’ll ask around when I visit Dragonsfall Weyr. We do have riders here who have come to speak to the weyrlings or served as mentors. I’ll have a conversation with a few of them.” Not wanting to start rambling in front of Q’vettan, he stopped his train of thoughts. “I’ll figure it out. Thank you, Weyrleader, for the opportunity. I’m sure I’ll see you soon.”
