Q'vettan

Q'vettan

Q'vettan waited until after wingdrills and the final wingriders had dispersed before finally meandering out to the Weyrling Barracks. It was unusual and off-putting to see an empty weyrling barracks in the middle of a Pass. Soon, there would be more. The barracks will be full of weyrlings.

"I'd ask if you had a moment, Weyrlingmaster, but I daresay you have a lot of them right now." Q'vettan said as he rapped on the doorframe before stepping into the office. "What does a Weyrlingmaster do when there's no one in the barracks?"

It was a question K’lvin had received often in his two Turns as a Weyrlingmaster. “Lesson plans,” he answered, spreading his hands toward the collage of hides and papers all in various degrees of completion.

“What can I do for you, Weyrleader?” He rocked back in his chair and gestured for Q’vettan to sit.

"A moment to breathe is the least you deserve after the last weyrling class." Q'vettan agreed as he took the offered seat, leaning back and kicking one leg over the other in the casual familiarity of old classmates. "I must admit, I was curious why you would have accepted a Weyrlingmaster's position. I somewhat recall the mischief we got into as weyrling assistants back in the day."

Amusement lit K’lvin’s eyes. “Yes, I remember well.” It had been difficult impressing young and being forced to wait to join the fighting Wings. “I had a heart attack right after River Bluff fell. It was a slow recovery, but even then, I was restless at Dolphin Cove. It wasn’t my home and I felt useless there. K’ran was my Weyrleader at River Bluff, and when he came here to help open Barrier Lake… Well, he was my Weyrleader. I couldn’t tell him no.” In some ways, K’ran would _always_ be his Weyrleader. “So I accepted his offer to lead the Weyrlingstaff here.”

"You could have, but the loyalty is admirable." Q'vettan said. "How is your health now? Are you keeping up with the youngsters these days?"

“I’d say, if my heart survived this last Weyrling group, it can survive anything.” What menaces they had been… but K’lvin sort of… _missed_ them.

"That's what I was hoping you'd say." Q'vettan answered, "I'd like to extend the offer for you to rejoin the Wings, if you think your health can manage it. I'd like to appoint you to Wingleader of Skybroom."

“Oh.” K’lvin’s smile faded a little with surprise. He had not expected to ever lead a Wing again after River Bluff fell. It was also J’nus’s Wing. He had stepped down and then Jeyme had resigned her Wingthird position and left. Skybroom had been through a lot. “That’s a tall order.”

"I wouldn't offer if I thought you couldn't handle it." Q'vettan said. "You're well decorated already, and a welcome fixture in the Weyr. For all the people grumbling about the changes I'm making to the Wings, they'll hardly find fault with you taking over Skybroom after everything. Guiding Riyanth's last dragonets to the sky and taking to the air yourself? I could write a ballad, if I were so inclined."

The other bronzerider barked out a laugh. “That’s a ballad, alright. Glory from ashes, and all that.” K’lvin exhaled contemplatively as he looked around his office. He had enjoyed being Weyrlingmaster and teaching the young ones. It was a worthy cause. But… it was not his life’s calling. “I guess I’ll need to start browsing for a Wingthird, then.”

Q'vettan's mouth twitched into a half-smile at that. "There's no rush for that, though the sooner the better. N'call's been holding it together, but I'm sure he'd appreciate a break. Shells, he might even welcome someone else taking on the Wingsecond knots for a while, after all that. I wouldn't blame him. Well, now that that's out of the way, tell me what else you've doing these last few turns. Earthquakes, heart attacks, what else can an apprentice turn into an opera?"

K'lvin grinned a little. "Let me tell you about the woman who broke my heart...."
