J'nic

J'nic

The Weyrling Barracks were located near the lighthouse, which was around the curve of the weyrbowl from the rest of the Weyr and a fair distance's walk. Thiseta was glad that it was a pleasant day, and that the wind off the lakeshore wasn't too bad. Still, when she arrived at her destination her brown hair was wind-whipped and coming loose from her braid.

Just as she was about to open the door it opened for her, and she came face to face with a freckled, fair-skinned man with a sprinkle of grey in his hair. Her gaze immediately went to his shoulder knots: the Weyrlingmaster Second. "You must be J'nic."

"I am," he said with a smile. "And you must be Thiseta." After the tragedy of losing Riyanth, there was a palpable sense of relief in the Weyrhold with the arrival of Thiseta and her gold. They now had some hope for the future. "Can I help you find anything? Or anyone?"

"I was looking for K'lvin, actually. I have a book for him," she said, holding up the volume in question. But this was an opportunity to meet one of the Weyrlingstaff, and Thiseta was never one to turn down an opportunity-- especially since they'd likely end up working together at some point. "But if you have a moment, I'd love a tour of the Weyrling Barracks? I understand if not, I am literally jumping out from behind a door to ambush you..."

Even if he had been in the middle of something, he would have put it aside to get to know the goldrider. "Sure, I can show you around. It's currently quiet, since our senior weyrlings are in their own weyrs now." He continued speaking as they walked down the hallway. "K'lvin was the one who gave me a tour of the space when I first transferred."

"Where did you transfer from?"

"I was born and raised at Dragonsfall Weyr. It took a lot of convincing from my weyrmate to come here, but I'm glad I did. Well," he stopped. "Here we are. Male weyrlings stay over here, female weyrlings on the other end. I don't think there's anything special about these barracks, compared to the ones at other Weyrs. Although it's nice that they're practically brand new." He smiled. "Maybe someone else would do a better job of talking everything up. It is a great space though."

"It is a great space," Thiseta said, admiring the neat rows of bunks. A part of her missed weyrling days, spending all your time with your peers and revelling in the newness that was a dragon. Her smile slipped a little. Back then, Thread was just a nasty footnote in the history texts. Not like now. "How long have you been with the Weyrlingstaff?"

J'nic noticed the change in expression but didn't comment on it, focusing on answering the question. "About a Turn and a half now. It was strange to transition from the Fighting Wings to this work but it's very fulfilling. I recently shifted to the Weyrlingmaster Second position and Viseya started as Weyrlingmaster Third. Have you met her yet? It's helpful to have a woman on the staff."

"I can imagine. And I haven't had the pleasure yet." Thiseta made a mental note to seek out the Weyrlingmaster Third. "How's the current class of weyrlings coming along? I heard that Aydhan's son Impressed?"

"A brown," J'nic confirmed with a nod. "It's a good group." He was proud of them. "Blooding is coming, but they're as ready as they can be." They both knew exactly what Blooding meant, so he didn't dwell on it. "With this class, we had a number of holdbred boys involved in the construction of the Weyrhold who became Candidates and Impressed. It has been ... interesting to see them excel at the physical components of being a dragonrider but struggle with some aspects of weyrlife. Of course, there are always some in that position, but there's been more of them this time around."

Thiseta nodded. "I can imagine. I suppose having so many Craft and Holdbred candidates was to be expected though, since the Weyr is so new still. I can't imagine that it was easy to find candidates."

"Kapera allowed everyone of the right age to Stand, even if they weren't officially Searched. I'll admit I was a bit skeptical, but a few of them Impressed." He shrugged. "It all worked out."

"Must have been crowded on the Sands," Thiseta said, although she was privately agreeing with Kapera's choice. A Weyrhold needed a good population of non-riders to support it, and tying down some of the Crafter families by allowing their children the privelage of Standing was clever.

"The dragonets had a good amount of choice," J'nic agreed. "And many of those who didn't Impress have stuck around as Candidates." They were all waiting to see whose gold rose first.

The pair finished their circuit, arriving in front of J'nic's office door. "You can see if K'lvin's door is unlocked if you want to drop off the book. After a weyrling prank though, he usually keeps it locked."

The knob rattled when she tried it, but J'nic was right-- K'lvin's door was firmly locked. "Darn. Well, maybe it works to my advantage. You looked like you were heading out when I ran into you. Perhaps if I walk you back toward the Weyr you'd regale me with the story?"

J'nic felt a stab of guilt at telling her, but she'd hear it eventually. He'd make sure to paint K'lvin in a positive light. "Well, I wasn't there when it happened, but it involved some weyrlings, a distraction, and glue..."
